The S2000 came out as the best sports car in a review carried out by the combinded state motor service clubs in Australia. Price was one of the criteria that certainly benefits the S2.
They include the tables used to rate the cars and this makes for interesting reading.

Motor Trend is a mouthpiece for domestic automakers. Just check the list of MTCOTY awards. You'll see such domestic "classics" like the '97 Chevy Malibu and the '95 Chrysler Cirrus. Heck, even their data isn't worth too much because they make so many typos. I swear they claimed a sub-6 sec Hyundai in a review a while back.
When they put down the S2000, keep the above in mind. Also keep in mind that they are headquartered in L.A., where it is difficult to enjoy any car to its fullest. The middle-of-the-pack torque curve of the S2K must be very frustrating in the sub-5 MPH LA traffic where you battle againt torquey SUVs for the open spot in the next lane over.
