Well, 7300 miles and a spinout at the track have prompted me to purchase some new rubber for the back end (I'm down to the wear bars). I'm being quoted a price of $30 per wheel for the mounting and balancing (it's a performance balance). My questions is: is this a reasonable price to do this? If not, what is the "going rate"?

Thanks for any input.

I will not pay over $20/wheel.

It is not unusual to pay $10 to $20 per wheel to mount performance tires on aluminum wheels (stiff sidewalls and wheels that scratch require more time).

It is not unusual to pay $7 - $12 per wheel for balance. There is also a $2 to $5 charge to get rid of junk tires sometimes.

You did not get the cheapest quote, but it is not the highest I have heard of.

Depends where live...Most of the places I know in Sacramento are charging under $20 and cheapest is $8 to mount and balance a wheel.

This totally fluctuates on the wheel and the rating on the tire. Z rated tires and low profiles are much harder to mount and need to be inflated in a cage. If you have aftermarket wheels then that sometimes costs more because they know you will be looking with a magnifying glass for any scratches they might have put on your wheel. So in other words the better looking the wheel and the more costly the tire the price for mount and balance goes up. At $30 bucks a wheel their making it worth their while.

It doesn't sound like I'm getting any kind of "deal" at this price, so i think I'll look around a bit more.

Thanks for the comments.

I got a "deal" and paid $35 for mounting 4 new tires and lifetime balancing on the wheels. Unfortunately, the technician did $230 worth of damage to the rims. This was mostly reimbursed, but the hassle wasn't worth it. Needless to say, I'd make sure that the shop knows how to handle quality alloy rims even if the price is a little on the high side.

I recently replaced my rears for $26 apiece, mounted and balanced. Before doing this I made sure the shop had the most recent Hunter equipment, which did not leave a single scratch on the rims. They even hand-torqued the lug bolts to the right setting.

On the down side, they mis-aligned the Hs on the hubs...

I had Tirerack ship 2 rear tires to my dealer, Weseloh Honda. They charged me $15 to mount and balance the tires. They also cleaned the air filter and tweaked the throttle cable while they were at it. They are terrific.

Well, after searching around a bit, I found that the local Acura dealer only charges $10.00 per wheel and only an extra $3 for self-adhesive wheel weights. I think I've found a winner.

Thanks for helping me save some $$ folks.
