The VAFC is not only for changing the VTEC engagment point but you can control the air/fuel ratios as well. The AEM unit is a replacement for the stock ECU as well plus with the AEM you will be able to fine tune for every mod including a turbo or supercharger. I think Mugen is a fine product and I am sure they have done a lot of research on their ECU. But their ECU can not be adapted for future upgrades. It is limited to the parameter that Mugen has set forth for their mods. The difference here is that Mugen has done the tuning for you as with a VAFC or AEM unit you will have to do it yourself.

could you say install both and have them run off a switch?

ya know, use the stock ECU for dayly driving, then you pull up to a light and <RANDOM RACER1> pulls up next to you and revs up, and you hit your switch and change over to the Mugen ECU.. and take advantage of the better fuel tabels and such?

just a thought..

on a side note: everyone's talking about AEM's ECU replacement, does anyone know for sure AEM has base fuel mapping and other ECU functions for the S2K ready to program into the ECU? or do you have to program that yourself? it'd be a major PIA to basically start BLIND with an ECU that has no information on the car.
Rich, I had previously inquired about this with AEM and they said that they would have a baseline file for the S2000. But here is the hitch they do not recommend you driving with out actually putting it on a dyno and tuning the vehicle first. So you have a start but you will still need to tune it's not plug and go.

For those of you with or considering the V-AFC... it's alot of bang for your buck, especially where this car is concerned. I think most are seeing gains in the 5-10 hp range. If you set VTEC engagement to 5600 and remap fuel and dyno tune... I think most will be very happy with the improvements. Considering that the Mugen ECU costs about 3x as much as the V-AFC installed and tuned then I would definitely consider all things.

Nick, by all accounts so far (and if I read the FSM corectly) the VAFC benefits won't be undone provided you utilize the "hi throttle" settings only. These only come into play at WOT when the ECU is in open loop mode. This restricts the ability to help part throttle drivability (which some have noted as a benefit of the Mugen ECU off idle), but should allow for consistent power gains up top.
