mugen s2k
got a question about the mugen s2k. what exactly is it?
i mean ive seen stuff like "project mugen s2k" and stuff like that, but the idea i get is that itz an s2k with a buncha mugen parts stuffed in it. is that what it really is or can you actually buy a "mugen s2k" as a whole? i think i saw it first in an issue of car and driver and i was impressed. they got the acceleration down to 5.4 for 0-60. but can you do that with just replacement parts?

i would think that if it had all mugen parts, it would be a bit more expensive....
and can you really cut your acceleration by half a second with just parts?

I certainly don't consider myself an expert on the subject, but I have toured the Mugen plant in Japan and King Motorsports is a sponsor of the club of which I am president. I email with the engineers at Mugen about various things and King Motorsports is the sole North American distributor for Mugen and they are the only ones who work on my car...
That said...
The car you are talking about is owned by the president of King. It's an amazing car...the likes of which won Best Sports Car at Road America for BRIC this summer...that was a great weekend.
The fact is that the go-fast parts that are on the car that are made by Mugen are highly engineered pieces that have a single purpose...to increase performance. That's it.
And to make the car go from 0-60 in 1/2 a second less and from 0-100 in a full second, is nothing short of a walk. If you beat a car by this amount, you have walked the car you were racing. It doesn't sound like much on paper, but in real life, it's significant.
It is my opinion that these times are conservative. I have lots of Mugen stuff on my car and the performance difference is absolutely amazing. I walked a friend of mine with a stock S2000 and I though he had missed a shift. I was asked by a guy in an e36 M3 is my car was supercharged one day at Gingerman. I have many accounts of this kind of thing...
The bottom line is that Mugen has the all the resources to back up their words, they support a vital and succesful F-1 racing program in addition to their S2000 endeavors.
And as I said, my opinion is that it's better than what you have read...also keep in mind the tests in that C&D article talks about cars for which tests were 1 year apart.
Contact King Motorsports if you want more detail on how make your S2000 perform to the best of its abilitities...

Mugen-wise, I have the header, ECU, rear AP-1 spoiler, MF-10 wheels and S1 seat...
In side by side tests with stock S2000's, my car has walked. It's pretty striking...
Gotta run...headed to Knoxville for the DragonBall Run!
