Default My 2000 S2k Keeps Dieing On Me. What could be the problem?

today i tired to start my car and it wouldent start. i figured it was the battery so i put it on the charger for 1 hr. after 1 hr i unhooked the battery charger and the car starting it up fine. i drove the car for about a 25 min and it drove fine. while i was driving back home i stop at a stop sign and the car just dies. i started the car back up immediatly and took off again. at the next stop light the car again died when i shifted into neutrual and completly stopped. what is causing my car to keep dieing on me? i am going to replace the battery but do you think it could be an alternator problem as well? just wondering if any of you have experienced this same problem in your s2k or any of your other cars.
thanks
alan

Could be an alternator. You should have it tested. before you buy a new battery.

You need to find the cause of the problem before you buy the battery.

I had almost the exact same problem this weekend. It seemed like the battery was holding about enough charge to start the engine once. I left my home, drove for about 20 minutes and shut off the car. Tried to start it a few minutes later and the car wouldn't turn over. I immediately started question the alternator. I took it to a Honda dealership and they checked the battery and alternator and concluded that the battery was charging and the alt. was supplying power. This morning when I went to start the car again, same problem, no power. It just seems like the battery is refusing to hold a charge so I got a new battery today. I hope that solves the problem.

BTW my S2K is also an very early 2000 model... maybe that's about the expected battery life?

If you still have the original battery, I'd just buy a new one. I think the S2000 batteries are wimpy and light weight. It might not solve the problem, but, even if it doesn't, you are about due for a new battery. So you're not really wasting any money by starting with that step.

My S2000 gets a boost from the charger every week if I don't drive the car.

A reputable battery retailer (NOT SEARS) can test your battery and tell if there is a battery or system problem. Test first, then spend money.

Get the battery first. I've had similar problems and a $60.00 dollar battery change is all it needed. Don't waste your money on a $30.00 or greater diagnostic check that will tell you you have a dead battery.

To me that doesn't sound like a battery or alternator problem though. Those would keep your car from starting every time. Your car is stalling. That sounds like an idle problem to me. Is your car out of warranty?

IMO, get a new battery and then go from there.

Perhaps your car knows that your name is mazdaspeed00 and is taking it out on you. Maybe you should change it to VTECspeed00.
