My Battery went dead!
So I'm at kragens getting some spray touch up paint for my soon to be sold 94 accord and I leave my wife sitting in the car listening to music with the fan on.
I come out 10-15 minutes later, and push the start button...nothing but a weak starter clicking noise. Very pissed off at my lil baby(car and wife), I get a kind hvac guy who's picking up parts to give me a jump. After 5 minutes of no success (battery is dead!), I decide to push start the beast.
First attempt in first gear stops the car dead in its tracks but no spark... I try again in second gear and the engine roars to life. So for any of you that ever has to jump this beast, remember to try it in second gear.
I get it home and see that the fluid in the battery is at the low level line (the caseing is translucent) so I refill it with distilled water and put it on a charger. It seems to hold the charge, but now I'm leary of traveling with this puny battery in tow. I can see that there is excess width available for a bigger battery. My car has 61k and this is probably the original battery so I'm now in the market.
I head out to Sam's club and compare cranking power. The OEM panasonic battery is a type 51 which puts out a measly 530 cranking amps and has a reserve rating of 45 minutes. As compared to a type 34 (which fits into a 6 cylinder accord) which puts out 950 cranking amps and has a reserve of 90 minutes.
Comparing the batteries side to side, the binding posts are located almost identically measured from the edge, the only difference being the type 34 is 2 inches wider. SOLD for $60!
The battery has a nice carrying handle built in on the top which allows for EASY drop in to the perfectly sized space in our S2k's.
After lengthening the hold down strap and tightening it down, I no longer fear losing power again!
