Default My car was broken into last night... :-( (pics)

You know... I've always worried about someone trying to steal my car and failing more than someone succeeding. If they succeed, oh well - I lose my car, but I get a nice check from the insurance company and I go buy a new car. But if they try and fail, I have to deal with all the mess of putting the car back together and fixing everything they mess up.

So at 7:00 am today, one of my girlfriend's neighbors called to let us know my car (parked outside) had been broken into. At first I thought it wasn't so bad, just a broken driver's side window. Nothing was stolen (not my stereo, not even my sunglasses).

They had tried to use a slim jim to open the door (the weatherstripping was out of place from the slim jim). Apparently, they pulled the window too far forward and shattered it, throwing glass EVERYWHERE. Looks like at that point they ran off. The policeman who wrote up the report said it looked like they were only interested in stealing the whole car, not just the parts.

I was a little worried about the paint, but I couldn't tell for sure at first if there were any scratches from the glass hitting it. There was glass stuck all over the car but it was dirty and had a lot of condensation on it, so I couldn't tell for srue if the glass had scratched it. I ran low pressure water over it to wash away the broken glass and found thousands of deep little 1/4 inch scratches ALL OVER THE CAR. There's also put a small dent in the driver's side door, apparently from the would-be theif leaning a knee against it while working on the lock.

First off..my apologies. Lets hope the thieving rascals endured slashed up their hands from the glass. I think it's just assenine how and why people commit such silly crimes. But enough of my ranting.

I was surprised to see so much glass on the hood of the car. You would think that if only the drivers side window was broken (from the outside of course), then most of the glass would have fallen inside, and that any shards falling outside would have scratched only the drivers side door. Nonetheless, you have some good pictures, so I would show them to your insurance adjuster. Heck, a new paint job might be in the cards for ya. Get rid of all those swirls and blemishes while you're at it!!

Good luck, and I hope everything turns out for the best.

It really sucks to read posts about cars getting broken into. Sorry it happened to you. Hope you get the car back into perfect condition soon.

Thanks VTEXTC... Unfortunately, I just had the front end repainted earlier this year and had no swirls or rock chips or anything wrong with the paint until today. I think the reason for the glass on the hood was that they were prying the window outward with the slim jim. So the glass flew outward, probably got all over the SOB who did it, and he probably batted his hands at it (dispersing it all over the car) either as a reflex because the breaking glass scared him, or he was just shaking it off his clothes and shook a lot on my car.

Either way, a little over half of the body panels are scratched, but I doubt the insurance company will pay to paint the panels that aren't scratched.

Did the cop do anything to try and figure out who might have took it? Possibly try to take fingerprints or anything like that?

Geez. . .sorry to hear of this. I hope you have everything straightend out soon with your S2000. Hopefully, it won't become another target. On a positive side, at least they didn't key the hell out of your S or rag up the interior.

Keep us posted.

Reverend-

Sorry to hear about your car. Hope you can fix it and polish it out so it's like new again.

Three days ago, when I came out from work, I noticed some silver scratch marks on top of the driver's side window. Someone put a hanger, or some kind of tool in, over the window, to try to unlock the door. I'm not sure if it was fresh, or not. Because I'm not sure when it happened, I don't know if they actually got into the car, or not, but I don't see any other damage.

A paging alarm system installation is in my near future, and I would advise you to do the same. Let us know if you find any witnesses, or get any other leads on the criminals. I know it's probably too late now, but let me know if I can help in any way. I work in West L.A. -Pete

Sorry for your car.

I really think that everyone should have an alarm with proximity sensor, shock sensor and tilt sensor. Try Clifford.
