Default My convertible top does not fold down correctly.

When lowering my top the bar that is just above the drivers head when the top is in the 'locked' position does not pull down correctly. I have to manually reach back and push it down, or else it will catch on the stock windscreen when lowering.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I had my local dealership look at it and they said they have never seen or heard anything like that. I sprayed the connecting joints with W-d40 thinking that would help, but it didn't. I originally thought that the two straps lost there strength to pull on the bar, but after looking at other S2000 tops I realized the straps are not normally very tight. What is wrong? Anybody have any guesses? When I showed it to the dealership I was there picking up my car, so they didn't have time to call the Honda tech line. I figured I would ask you guys before I had them call the tech line to see if anybody else has this problem.

John showed this to me the other day and it is odd. I have never heard of another one doing this.

Anyone else out there have this problem?

TaxiS2k has/had the same problem/issue with the top. we noticed it because his was the first 2001 we ever saw and the top did not sit as low as everybody elses S2000. I came down to it was the straps not being tight enough.(springie enough)

Its not totally unheard of but as for a fix.

Does anybody know how to fix this problem? I know others are having the same problem because yesterday I saw Schatten's car, and it does it too. I haven't scheduled a trip to the dealership yet because I don't like going up there... but I will soon if I can't get this resolved. It is such a miniscule problem, but I do not want to "get used to it" I want it fixed.

i have noticed recently the same problem on my car. not a big issue for me but i asked my local dealership about it and here is what they said...4 fixes (actually, they only offered 3 and i suggested the 4th and they are really cool and were agreeable to it) the problem is the strap behind not having enough tension to pull the bar down during operation.

1. the simplest, but crudest. take the strap and loop it once around the bar. this creates enough tension for it to pull it down during operation. works, but i nixed this one...you can try it yourself and put it back if you don't like it in like 5 seconds.

2. they said that they can take the two screws/rivets out, shorten the straps, and refasten it. this is a acceptable fix. doesn't look jimmy rigged and fixes problem.

3. they said that they can replace the top. i was good with this option as well, but there is no guarantees that the next top will fix this problem. Plus, you run the risk of the top not sealing as well as the original. As much as we want to think that the honda dealership service guys are the more than qualified, truth is they are no more qualified than the next well trained auto mechanic for non normal items such as the convertible top. its not like they work on thousands of them a month. the dealership i went to was very honest with me and said that they have not done a top replacement, it is not easy, and there are risks.

4. since the dealer was cool with replacing the top, i asked if it would make a difference if i waited and went for the 2002 top with the glass and paid the difference. he said it was cool and this is what i am waiting for.

you should make the dealer fix it all the way up to replacing the top. it is a defect and just mention that you are unable to use the boot without it being fixed. depending on how cool your dealer is, they might just go with #2 tho.

My top has had this problem from day one, but I did not know it. The top would bind up just before full retraction. I kept pushing on the retracted top to make it stow better but with no results. I even remember someone pointing out to Barry in WY that his top seemed to be sticking up too far in a picture he posted. I thought that it was identical to mine, so I performed the top boot TSB on my own. Only then did I discover that the center bar on the top did not move aft far enough during retraction. A gentle push with the top half open solves the problem, but is a nuisance. Anyone that approaches their dealer about a fix, please post the results.

The hinge is a bit tight - just move that stubborn bar back and forth a few times.

What billo said!

I bought my car in November and one amazing day in May the top DID retract properly.

Before that, I could never put the tonneau cover on without a 20 minute struggle and lots of help. I took it to the dealer and the service manager was as mystified as I was about how to put the tonneau cover on. He called Honda-Tech line and they were clueless. I've got some scratches on the plastic that covers the passenger roll bar because of our attempts.

There is a TSB on fixing this and I plan to have it done soon. In the mean time, I assist the middle bar as it goes down.
