Something to keep solidly in mind about CARFAX is that they can't tell you what they don't know.
For example, I know of a 4 month old Grand Cherokee that was T-boned & should have been totaled (the insurance adjuster's pressure on the body shop ended up costing the insurance company about $10K over what totalling the vehicle would have, but that's a different story). The car was visibly OK by the time the body shop was done, but (for instance) had a engine/transmission seal leak 6 months later that was clearly the result of bad workmanship on the repair.
Back to CARFAX. Their report on the vehicle was completely clean when the car was traded in. Not through any failure of CARFAX, but because the information wasn't reported.
So, my recommendation to you is to take negative reports seriously, but be careful about assuming a clean report means everything is OK.
