My odometer was reset !!!
I've had wired issues with my fuel guage too.
Last week, on the way home I looked at my fuel when I left the office (and the closest gas station) and it showed FOUR bars. I figured this was more than enough for my short trip home and back to the office. 5 miles down the road, I look down, and there were NO bars left. Nothing. Nada.
Well, I climb 2000 feet to get home. If I run out of gas, I'm walkin' and comin' back with a gas can. So I turned back and got gas. 11.8 gallons. wtf?

Actually, if you sell it you must declare that the milage shown isn't the actual milage. There is normally a check box or something on the title. This usually destroys the resale value. Of course you could not mention it, however you may go to jail if someone finds out. I don't know how they could buy it is a risk.
I would demand an explanation from the dealer and possibly damages.
