Hi everyone, I have (or I should say now , had) a white on red, 2004, all stock, S2000. It was a Canadian car that I drove down to New York City for the summer and ended up staying longer due to covid. It was parked on the street, although I know it should have been safely stored in a garage.
A few days ago I went to check on it and it wasn’t there. I reported it stolen, but first I cried, and then went to the police station to fill out a report. To make a long and tragic story short... it was stolen (roof cut), stripped for interior parts and ditched on the side of the freeway in Brooklyn.
To any S2000 drivers in the city or in the surrounding boroughs please be aware! I would hate for this to happen to someone else. Park your car in a garage and if it’s on the street, move it around regularly or park it somewhere “safe”.
In the NY NJ metro area, last summer there were a LOT of cars stolen, and I don't think any were recovered. So in a sense you are very lucky they found your car.
The thieves deserve the full punishment allowed. But I gotta say, they weren't as mean as some. They didn't tear up stuff they didn't take (other than the roof). They had to remove the shift knob to take the console, but then returned it to its place. Is that the user manual they left neatly on the console area? They left the dash shell neatly in passenger area.
Not saying they are nice guys, they stole stuff. There aren'tany honorable thieves stealing from hard working ordinary people. Just saying it coulda been a lot worse.
Hope they catch the fools who did this! I know a few people who leave their S parked in the city. Even I do sometimes but this is just a bad reminder of what can happen.
I’ve seen a bunch in the city! That’s why I wanted to warn people. These fools are probably on the prowl. Take care of your S people. The NYPD said that car theft is on the rise.
Unless they had a tow truck they were semi-professional thieves who spotted the car and returned with a matching ecu/key , well experienced with S2000 theft. It shouldn't be an easy car to steal but people with the right parts and experience can do it in minutes.
I doubt insurance will want to fix it. I feel like it will be too much work. They will probably just pay me and auction the car.
does anyone have any experience with this?
Depends on the value of the vehicle according to your insurance company and the cost to repair. It's purely a numbers game at that point. I don't know if those seats are readily available so maybe you could get them to agree to aftermarket seats as they'll likely be cheaper than trying to source/buy OEM Honda. The top will cost a good chuck also. It's going to boil down to the value of your vehicle though.

Why then would they rip the roof to gain access if they came back (I have no idea how) with a matching eco/key?
I think they spotted it, did a recon, came back with a tow vehicle, ripped the roof to put it in neutral and release brake ( I bet the steering was centered) and towed it away.
I feel for you. The times I have been ripped off in life have really had an impact on me. I absolutely despise thieves.
