But that's a problem I am trying to work on.So, I ask. . .what is fair game? Do I supress my feelings until I have a meltdown or do I unknowingly piss folks off with remarks on how I truly feel?

What do folks want to hear? Obviously, to the owner of this S2000, the flames look great. So, while it's obvious that not everyone cares for it, I would say that if it makes him happy, why not!
In the end, he pays for his own car and drives it. But when it comes to asking folks for their opinion, it's all fair game.
I'd have to agree with airgate... not saying something is kinda like not telling your friend he has a big booger on his face before a big date
Actually... I think (or hope) those are just stickers
