I can't believe my horrible luck!

I was away on business for a month and got back looking forward to driving my beloved S2000. My first day out a semi tries to run me over, two cars cut me off (almost causing wrecks), then a huge dirt clod hits my windshield from God knows where.

I didn't see any cracks so I breathed a sigh of relief, when I got home I wiped off the windshield I found the glass had been gouged in a 2" square!!!!

Oh it gets better, when my wife looks at the damage she proceeds to tell me how the windshield must be fragile on my stupid expensive little car.

Anybody got any sympathy for this lousy situation?

PS: I'm afraid she is right about the windshield since there are so many posts about windshield pitting, cracking, and replacement. I wonder why the windshield it so fragile.

I replaced mine within the first two months of ownership. The replacement has been much better. After 5 months no chips

my windsheild got hit with a rock well over a year ago. The crack has been spreading equally in each direction ever since. It's low enough that it doesn't bother me, and I'm thankful it didn't hit the hood and leave a huge dent and paint scrape. however, the ends of the crack are now turning up towards the top of the windshield like Longhorns. Maybe I'll become a U of Texas fan?!?

I agree that the windshield is basically crap but don't want to mess with fixing it until I have to. Sucks about your drive - isn't that always the way, just when you have the time to go out and have some fun there are dinks all over the place trying to ruin it.

As I posted in a thread about 3 months ago, I had one long crack and (separate from that) one big chip - within the first week I had my brand new S ! I had only run ~500 miles by then and was driving very carefully. Always keeping my distance. But still it happend.

After that, I had my windshield replaced and have had no problems at all since then. And I am not driving any more careful these days (all I say here is VTEC ) .

Telling by my personal impression, I would say the replacement windshield is much better.

While I'm not an expert on glass, I think that the problem is more the angle than the hardness. A friend of mine had a Saab and had to replace it several times. The windshield angle was very high and particles didn't deflect well. I think ours is angled high too.

You get my pity for both the car and the callous wife.

I understand to save on weight, Honda has a thinner windshield for the S. Therefore, it may be more prone to damage.

I've come to realize in this world its either cut-off or be cut-off. Whenever I drive nice I get cut-off, and usually by people who want to drive 56 mph instead of 55.

On the windshield- there was a good post on this months ago. Apparently it is a soft glass that pits easily. Even small rocks tend to pit the glass. I have 1 major star and a few tiny pits- just big enough to bother me. But it still beats that damned piece of plastic behind me.

People have said the PPG glass is harder.

Driving home, heading west into the setting sun a couple of months ago, I was blinded by my windshield when the sun hit it. It looked like it had been sandblasted, with hundreds of very small pits that diffused the sun's rays and made it ALMOST impossible to see.

I was able to fix this condition myself with my Porter Cable polisher and a new window polishing kit from these people: http://www.properautocare.com/index.html

They have a polishing kit that works very well. It removed the very small stuff that was blinding me under the right conditions and smoothed the larger spots out a bit. I had one spot the size of a dime that was just a large scratch and I was able to polish that out. At $40, it was much more cost effective than replacing the windshield.
