Good day everyone.

Well finally I am ready to pick up an S2K after selling my 12 second mr2, all motor hatch and a bunch of other junk. I can now put a rather large down payment on a St00K Yay for me.

Anyway after doing Lots and lots of research it looks like the 2002 is the way to go.

There is about a 3,000-5,000 dollar delta between the 2 models.

MY00's and MY01's can be had from 19K-23K (say 20-30K Miles)

And the MY02's can be had for about 24K and up.

I can save up to 5-6K in getting a MY00/01.

Is it worth it?

The glass rear window and the improved trans is almost enough for me to just take the plunge on a MY02. Does anyone know specifically what was improved in the trans?

Besides the small interior changes is there any other major changes in the 02's?

I do want to go with an 02, but would love to save about 5K

There's an ECU change on the '02s as well.

I own an 01, and I got the buzzing and the 1-2 grind fixed. I haven't had any other problems with the car! The plastic rear window doesn't really bother me, I use Plexus(plastic polish) and a roof well mat and I don't have any problems. I love the car and whether you get an 01 or 02, you will definetely enjoy either one of them.

Some have posted that the MY02+ runs more HP at the wheels then the MY00-01. Posts were about anywhere from 5-10 HP, but I haven't prove this.

You also get the bling-bling chrome rings around the taillights on the 2002 model. The stereo is slightly improved and I know I enjoy not having to worry about babying and polishing my window like the early model owners have to do. You will also most likely get some of the factory warranty on a 2002 and that is less likely with an older model. Only you can decide if these changes are worth the extra money.

isn't the dividing piece between the seats on the MY00-01 carpet as well. On the MY02-03 its leather and there is a different panel that says s2000 when you open the doors. This might not be that big of a deciding factor tho, just that I would get carpet burns on my knees everytime I get into my S if i got the earlier model. These are just my personal preferences tho, much love for the 00-01 models since with the plastic rear its bigger so less of a blind spot

Hey Enemy X, I think remember seeing you around the MR2 board. Not sure what one, but sounds familuar. This is MR2 Quik. We used to have a 91T that was built to have 600 rwhp.

OK, now to answer your questions....I was in teh same exact position as you about 3 months ago. Sold my 91T for $18K and put that down on a new MY03. I looked, and a good low mileage MY02 or 03 was around $27K, expecially in the Bay area. I got my Spa for $33,500 OTD and it had 8 miles on it. Plus I knew how it has been driven and broken in....cuz I did it

I'm sure some lots still have a MY03 available that you can haggle down on price if you wanted. Unless if your hearts set on used, I would go for the MY02+. The minute changes they made in them are a big difference to some. The rear glass, the upgraded speakers/stereo, the chrome ring'd tails and if you plan on getting a Hardtop, the kit is cheaper.

Hope that helps.

Do a search for "oil jet bolts" and make sure you buy an 02 with the engine serial #'s that will include this upgrade. I bought mine in july of 02 and it has this upgrade. They ghanged over to the new bolt in mid year of 2002. Good luck.

Yo thanks everyone

And Quik S2K: Yea I lurk the boards every once and a while and have seen and read lots of your post. Always one of the board members I respected.

Looks like I'm gonna just do the 2002, I mean hey I'm gonna have my next car (s2000) for a long time I might as well get the best one I can get.

There are a few 03's around so I will see if I can haggle those guys down a bit.

Really the trans and the oil jet bolt stuff makes the decision for me. I don't want to have to "deal" with anything with my s2k. Just drive it and have fun.

hey Quik S2K: a 600HP mr2, haha man my 12 sec mr2 (12.6 @109) was FAST and that was only 310 WHP yours must have been stupid fast hahah.

So how does it compare? The s2k to the Sw20?
