I'm sure they did get an insurance payout. They are probably thinking that they can get more for the broken car+insurance money vs. spend the insurance money & sell repaired car. Considering what the bidding is up to I'd say they will make out by selling the car unrepaired and pocketing the money to repair it.

That's what I did when I wrecked my first S .... worked out much better for me than taking the value they were offering for a total loss

I inquired about the car and the story from Cambridge Honda in Boston (the selling dealer) was that the car was put into a guard rail by a lot attendant. Supposedly, it was a $6800 estimate to repair. Clean MSO (full warranty) for whoever bought the car. The dealer rep did say, however, that Carfax would show a payout from the insurance company against the VIN of the car. Attached is what I got from the dealer and after a phone call to them I was satisfied it was on the up and up:

<To answer many questions. I made a mistake the interior is light blue not black.

To list out the major parts
rear bumper cover
quarter panel
door shell
right fender
rear alloy wheel / tire
rear right upper/lower control arms - might just need the lower

The car was being driven to another dealership when it hit a puddle then the guard rail.

The car has a clean Certificate of Origin, who ever buys this vehicle will end up with a clean title.

The sticker is for $33,200 our cost was $30,000 the estimate is for $6,800. I am looking in the $21,000 range give or take.
This is a pretty good deal for a body man who can fix it for a lot less. My problem is if I fix this car and sell it, I will have to disclose all of the damage. At this point I will lose quite a bit of money.>

$21.1k though? That is crazy money. I was interested at $15k and even that was a reach. Why would someone want to be in an '04 S2k for $28k to $30k that will always have a story? You can buy a perfect new one for that with no stories.

Kudos to the dealer though for getting top dollar. As for the buyer, well, you have my condolences.

Yikes, I hope the buyer can get parts/labor on the cheap. I can't believe someone would actaully pay that much for the car. Just looking at the pictures, I could tell it would need a heck of a lot more work than just "body panels." Plus, if the car hit a guard rail with enough force to BEND the upper/lower control arms, there's a good chance that the frame is bent as well (and if one control arm is bent, the other should be replaced even though the dealership says it may only need the lower). Man, "buyer beware" on this deal.

what paint work was involved in the quote?

with my untrained eye, is see damage on the front bumper and probably some broken tabs on the R headlight housing. the L front wheel looks a bit off, too.
