Well at least we know the limits of the crown Vic's now. Let see 124mph compared to 150mph top speed for the S UUUMMM! I guess I'll try to out run one later Of course that is until they call the Chopper!

Speaking from experience, it's a waste of taxpayer money. Most pursuits are conducted at less than 100mph. Vehicles for law enforcement officers need to be heavy and provide protection for forced stops. No Camaro is going to provide it without extensive modification. I wouldn't get caught in one. Some local politician needs to get on the band wagon an put a stop to it. Only vetern officers would be permitted to operate such a vehicle anyway. A good officer doesn't need a hotrod to catch a criminal if they practice good radio techniques, and have an impecable since of direction.

This is some bonehead Captain that thinks it will be a deturrent to wood be speeders. Being out in force is what's needed. Having a presence is all that is needed. I just wonder about what type of message we are sending out when we continue to do crap like this. There are three times as many law enforcement officer on the street now than 6 years ago. This is unnecessary.

It could be worse. In Europe some cops drive Porsches. Go figure.

From my post in the Electronics Forum

"Here in NC,

NCSHP- X or K in most marked cruisers (MPH K-55)
NCSHP and RPD- Ka on almost every motorcycle (MPH BEE-36 or Python)
RPD- K and Ka in most cruisers

Please keep in mind the 125 black marked and unmarked Chevy Camaros that just went into service on 7/01.(Ka Dual antenna). Very few, if not any, will have lightbars. These cars sat in the motorpool since Feb 1st, because they could not afford to put lightbars on them (LOL). Therefore, these units have dashmounted blue lights and standard stobes in the markers.

Confirmed sightings of non-standard NCSHP Vehilces to date;
Dodge Durango (Charlotte Motor Speedway 10 units)
Ford Explorer/ Expedition
Chevy Blazer/Tahoe
Chevy Impala (FWD?) Why even bother?

SkipX,
You can add a Jeep Cherokee to your list. I saw one today in Haywood County.

Yes, the Camaros are a little cheaper than the Vics, but they are far less functional as a patrol car. For example, a second trooper with a back seat will have to be dispatched if the Camaro boy has to haul in a DWI. The Camaro drivers are getting about 30 hrs of additional vehicle dymanics training.

NC is running 13 FWD Impalas for evaluation. Well, make that 12, because one of them went into the woods backwards after the trooper learned a hard lesson in FWD trailing throttle oversteer (my source is a NCSHP public information officer).

Yeah. . . . . . .

Check this site

http://www.nccrimecontrol.org/newsrels/shp...01/camaros.html

This could be why NC is about to cut $800 million in spending and needs another $500 million just to balance the budget!

Looked all over in the site for a photo of the Camaro. . .no luck!

I know that the state used Ford Mustangs a few years back. . .wonder what made them choose Chevy!?!

All the cruisers are Crown Vics! Who really cares, I guess! I would'nt run from any of 'em! + HALO!

HaHaHa!
