Yes, I think you can feel the VTEC transition more clearly in the '00-'03 F20C than in the '04 F22C. We owners of the older cars love it. However, in reality, the lack of a VTEC kick is a design advantage. You've got the power available with more control in the '04.
I disagree with this. At least at WOT. To me the kick at WOT is every bit as substantial in the '04 as it was in the '03 I drove. At partial throttle it may be different but I can't attest to that as I only did full throttle VTEC runs in the '03. It seems to me that most of these reports have come from people that have taken test drives at dealers where the cars were new/tight and were possibly not being fully wrung out. It also seems that all the prior year owners who have swapped to '04 have commented that after running the motor in the kick appears to be basically the same in force but with perhaps a bit less pronounced sound level increase. I also think all the dyno plots we've seen bear that out as well. The power and torque curves really look almost identical (except at the very top and bottom ends), only shifted upward a bit on the '04
