Try the following when trying to shift into reverse..

1) Make sure car is at complete stop
2) Shift into 1st
3) Shift into reverse

Let the clutch in and out while in neutral.

The lockout mechanism in the Honda manual transmissions for the Reverse gear can sometime bog a normal shift into reverse. Just shift it back to neutral (move side to side) and then try again.

Another reason could be that the gears are not lined up - in which case, shifting into 1st as Kai Wang suggested then into Reverse will help. Sometimes, if your tranmission oil is cold, you may have to let the clutch first and then try again.

"Thanks for posting my request for help. Did view some suggestion on the forum today and tried them. Unfortunately, they did not work with any
degree of consistancy. The dealership's chief mechanic and Honda's District Representative are still sratching their heads.

Do you have an email address at Honda where I could make an inquirey? Not being able to use reverse gear in a $35,000+ investment is very disappointing.

I appreciate your help very much."

Ok folks if anybody else has any other suggestions I'm sure Norm would find them helpful.

Norm,
I have suffered great difficulty with reverse myself. Sometimes it takes 2 hands to get there. I am swapping my car though for a newer one and hope that this will be something of the past.
I am in the UK and when I spoke to the dealer about this they just shrugged and recommended little as my problem was 'intermittent'. They had not heard of anyone else with this issue.

Regards,
Simon.

Ya it's annoying. It occurs more frequently when I drive out in the morning I guess. I lot of suggestions have been made such as shifting to first and then back etc. But if you do it a few times it'll work anyways. Just be patient and try not to jam it in even though it's one method of getting it into reverse.

I have also noticed this at times. What I have found to be effective is, while pulling back on the shifter into reverse, let the clutch up a little. The way I understand it is that sometimes the gear teeth line up and won't allow the gears to engage.
