Default Need opinion on 2002 S2000 please

I work for a dealership and I checked our inventory today and found a S2000 with the color combinations I like. Its a White 2002 with red interior. It has 64k miles on it and they're asking for $16,985. Now, because I work for this company(car is at another dealership), I can probably get it for less. Maybe around 15,500 to $16,000. It supposidly still have a factory warranty on it, but I have to double check on it. So is this a good deal?

What types of things should I be looking out for this year. I hear the top tends to rip 6-8 inches away from the windows. The passenger side wheel well tends to leak. The outer red part of the tail light sometimes fade to white. And the transmission synchros get noutchy. Anything else I'm missing?

How long do these engines generally last? Realistically.

I know this is a S2000 board. HoweverI would like to get some unbiased opinions please. Thanks!!

-Dave

factory warrenty = 3 years. I doubt it still has one.

I've seen plenty of people in the 100k+ mileage club and still going strong. It all depends on how it was cared for.

I would say 15kis better than 17k, obviously., and a tad more inline with what I would feel comfortable paying. But you also have to be willing to pay that little extra to get exactly what you want

that sounds a bit high for a MY02 with that many miles

id definitely suggest maybe $15.5 or so on the high end, red interior is a plus tho, especially on white

O, I forgot to mention KBB is $18,9xx for retail. This would be considered a retail since it would be sold through the dealership.

Thanks for the inputs so far. Keep them coming!

I'd say 15.5 sounds pretty good.

KBB has never been a very accurate representation for pricing in my opinion.

I bought MY02 with 49k miles for 16k so even 15.5 is a little high...

I was told my car still has the factory warranty too, altho its non transferable i still know the original owner and i can bring it to him to bring it in

Check the body panels (especially the edges) for signs of repainting. If the last four digits of the VIN are below 5000, then make sure the TSB for the #4 cylinder banjo bolt has been completed. Finally, I personally would avoid any car that has aftermarket performance mods because it's more likely to have been abused.

GPW w/ full red interior is one of the rarest and best looking S2K color combinations out there. Go for it!

Sound like a good deal for me. If I was in USA I will purchase it if condition is good. Answering your questions:
  • soft top rips behind the doors means the soft top was removes (read as "the vehicle was hit in rear end and restored")
  • engines last pretty much if they were treated good and not pushed to their limits daily. check all gasket leaks etc.
  • synchros - truth. 1st gear can be hard to select on cold engine (there's TSB about it and please confirm that it will be fixed if found).
  • i also got 4th gear popping on high speed but (also TSB) but it happend 1-2 times a month so you will not get a chance to diagnose it quickly.

You should look locally on craigslist and cars.com to see what people are asking for a similar age/mileage s2k. Location matters a lot. If you were in the pacific NW, I'd say that's not bad, but if you're in california, I think you could get a better deal.

for 17k, it's not a screaming awesome deal either way, but it's in the ballpark, if you could get down around 15.5 to 16 and it's the colors that you want, definitely take it.

Factory warranty is out, but it might have a hondacare extended.
