Sounds like you're stuck with the car.

Did you get an oil change? The owners manuel says to check your oil every time you fill your tank for a reason. I'm not sure how many people do this, but I'd check it at least once per month. This car can burn oil quick and cause some major engine problems if you run dry. It sounds like the previous owner didn't take very good care of it.

How does the rest of the car appear?

Getting an oil change and a new air filter iz no big deal and not worth arguing over in my opinion.

Tires are a different question. Are they so2's? If so good...I wouldn't worry about a lil bit of wear, but thats just me.

I wouldn't want to be stuck with an auctioned off car with signs of neglect from a small shady dealer. Maybe you'll be lucky and the car will be just fine. Don't forget to get winter tires if you have so2's on your car, very important if your car will be driven in <40 degrees or snow!

Think about this.

The car was a trade in. It was probably traded in for a new who knows what. That New Car Dealer decided that this S has issues and offloaded it at auction. All New Car Dealers keep the good cars. You know, the one that fetch top dollar? The junk goes to auction.

With what you have been posting, Mr. Shyster has go you by the balls. He knows people. He knows you love the car and he will pull harder. He will rape you over the coals.

Please let us know how it goes. Whatever the outcome, Good Luck!

S02's are OEM tires. The best dry road, street tires for this car.

Be cool about returning the car. Chances are the guy doesn't know squat about this particular one. He's just trying to make a sale (can't believe he didn't have somebody top off the oil before putting the car on the lot ). If what you say about "having 7 days" to change your mind is true then it shouldn't be impossible to back out of the purchase. He'll try to change your mind for sure but remember your playing by his rules. Simply be adamant (but cool) about changing your mind. Don't readily offer reasons why either (no law says you have to explain yourself). If you must, give reason(s) he can't argue with.

You keep asking if we think there is a chance that the car is OK or not or if it's a "crapper" or not. You don't actually believe that a bunch of people over the internet can truly tell you this one way or the other, do you? We can't see the car. We can't hear the car. We can't touch the car or drive the car. We don't know how it was taken car of before you got it.
Of course there's a "chance". There could be a "chance" that it's OK. There could also be a chance it's not OK. If 10 people here told you your chances are favourable, the car could still turn out to be a nightmare. If 10 people here told you your chances are NOT good, the next guy who buys it could be driving it trouble free for the next 100K miles. Sooner or later, you have to take responsibility for you own decisions.

Spending 20K plus for a used car is a scary proposition when it's a regular 4 door sedan. It's even scarier when we're talking about a highly tuned sports car that more often than not was probably driven fairly hard. First off I would not believe a word a dealer tells me when he is trying to sell me a car. The questions you need answered here are: is the car in good shape and was it properly cared for and maintained. Based on what I'm hearing it might be in ok shape but it was definitely not properly maintained.

I agree with Xviper ultimately you are responsible for making the decision here. It sounds like you are having a difficult time weighing the relative importance of what you have learned about this car\deal, ie the dealer lied to you, was the car sent to an auction lot, etc. Personally the fact that the car had no oil in it would tell me all I need to know about this car.

The fact that you felt it neccessary to ask for opinions from us tells me that you have your doubts about this car. Again for me, having significant doubts about a 20k purchase would be more than enough motivation for me to walk away from a deal. There are lots over used S2000s out there...

i went to the dealer today and talked things over with him. the other guy he works with is new and told me about the car the first time i saw it there. he had said it was being sold for a friend and had new tires. the owner of the dealership confirmed this was not true (they had an 02 s2000 selling for a friend) and he did say it was bought at an auto auction. he said that the tires were pretty new, and the 02 s2000 needed new ones asap. im still working on what to do about him paying for tires, but he is going to cover the oil/filter change and buy me a k&n drop in air filter.

i got the used car check at a honda dealership, so im gonna call them tomrrow or monday to talk to the mechanic that wokred on my car speciffically and see if the clutch or the differential was looked at during the check.

the car drives fine, no leaks in the rain, doesnt sound like somethin is loose or rattling or anything so we'll see what happens in the next 2 or 3 days.

thanks for all the help/advice, obviously im a newb, this was my first car purchase so im learing a good lesson from it

Good Luck with it. Drive Safe.
