Default NEW or OLD?

I have been thinking about trading in my BMW 330 Convertible for an S2000. I like sporty cars and do understand the difference in displacement and torque between the new and old configurations. However, I would like some input on the suspension and driving impressions of the two models. I know the interior was enlarged somewhat, but is the earlier car better (or worse) in some ways than the later car? I have heard that the earlier cars reved much higher and performed a little better at the top end compared to the newer cars which are better for tooling around town.

Give me your thoughts.

performance is equal. comes down to personal preference. i drove a used ap2 for a bit when i considered trading in, but decided against it. it all comes down to what you want. i'd drive both then decide.

You say you like sporty cars, but the S is a sports car and that's all it is. Which means you'll be giving up a lot of amenities and additional space you may be enjoying now. Make sure you're ready for that first. The AP1 vs AP2 has been discussed and fought to death. I've only driven the '03. More than adequate for "tooling" around town. I love the car. I'm sure I'd be happy with the newer one as well. Try to drive both, but either is going to be a major change from the 330. Good luck!

The rest of the world deals with taxation issues on engines over 2.0 litres.

I've owned an '01 and an '04 and I prefer the '04.

Performance is basically equal, they just behave a bit differently through-out the powerband.

I wouldn't worry too much about which one to get from a performance standpoint. There has been much (ad nauseam) discussion on this site regarding the difference between AP1 and AP2. I'd say that unless price is an issue, go buy a brand new one. Everyone loves to be the first person to own a car!

I had an 02 and now have an 05. They are very similar yet different but if you have never driven an AP1 you won't miss the extra 1000 rpms. The AP1 requires more attention and the AP2 is easier to drive fast.
