Default Newbie Intake Questions

I'll start off this message by stating I have searched the forums, but have not found all the answers I've been looking for. I'll gladly accept any flames if I have overlooked something.

Basically I'm looking to add an intake to my S (MY05 if that makes a big difference). It is my daily driver in the summer, so it does see some wet weather. I understand the snorkel-type intakes will draw in cooler (and therefore more oxygen-rich) air by being further from a hot engine and radiator.

However, being between the fender and the wheel I would imagine would expose the intake to more water. Is this the case? Is a snorkel-type intake a poor choice for a daily driver?

As some background, I'm looking to add an intake purely for a more aggressive sound from the car. Any performance increase I understand will be slight, if at all. Mainly this is more for sound and cosmetics (I can't believe that Honda calls that 5lb mass of plastic an airbox).

An alternative I've been looking into would be the Comptech intake, as it appears to sit in the engine bay and not dip below the fender. It also appears to be a part of the Comptech supercharger kit which is a mod I may consider in a few years. If one already has the Comptech intake, is it possible to purchase the kit without that particular part?

A lot of questions here, I know. I'm hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. Thanks!

from what ive heard in person, the v2 is the loudest from AEM probably because its designed to use harmonics to "charge" the cylinders with air. i have the v1, and even it is pretty loud. ive heard injen, AEM v1 and v2, and a cheapo ebay one which was actually loud(though fitment is a pita).
hard to tell though how loud it is with an invidia exhaust.
all of these relocate the air filter to behind the bumper and with the drain hole taped, and a makeshift umbrella, you should be pretty much waterproofed. if not, AEM offers a air bypass valve, which i have installed, which "virtually"(according to AEM) eliminates the chance of hydrolock.

hope this helps,

sam

Where do you live? Unless its a downpoor you shouldnt have any problems. Just stay away from sitting water. For me in AZ, its a non issue...

Well, since my car is a daily driver and I do take road trips in it in the summer, it isn't exactly inconceivable that I could easily find myself in downpour situations. My larger concern is more in driving for a few hours on highways with rain/water on the roads.

Overall "loudness" isn't necessarily my goal. I'm just looking for a nice sweet sound. Thats one reason why I have ruled out a single exhaust, I would much prefer a dual setup.

i had an ebay cold air intake with a k&n filter....fitment was decent, sounded great, but my car sat in my driveway yesterday during some rain (heavy at times) and it had a shit load of water in it, i mean, when i took the intake out, the water that was inside formed a puddle under the lift (btw, i took it off today because my battery died, and when i was jumping the car, i could hear a "gurgling" sound coming from the intake)
so if u go with a cai, i would highly recommend sealing off the drain hole as well as getting a bypass valve.

You should not have any issues with heavy rain. What you want to look out for with a cai is standing water. You pretty much have to submerge the intake in water to have any issues. Or go through a huge puddle of standing water. A little bit of water from rain sucked up into the intake is not going to cause HL. With the heat of the engine most of the water from rain will evaporate before it enters the engine.

Please correct me if I am incorrect
