what purpose does the side vent in the door / rear fender serve on a front engined car? seems gratuitous

As far as it being a 3D model, I'm pretty sure the body is just airbrushed from scratch with reflections added afterward... doesn't look like 3D work to me. Definitely well done though, although the front bumper perspective looks a little off to me.
