Since you binned the stereo you're not averse to mods. Buy one of the many small weather resistant clocks (stick-on or bracket) made for motorcyclists who have your same need to know the time.

I find having a clock in an easy to read location very useful.
I remember sticking a cheap digital clock on my '02 Honda 919, because it did not have one.
Instrument cluster is definitely the best place for it...
