Default Notchy gear change 2 to 3

Hi all,

I have had a search through previous posts looking for an answer but although this seems to be a known problem I could not find any solution.

The closest description I found was

"What causes an occasional "catch" between 1st and 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd? The "catch" could be described as subtle (not a grind) but is annoying. Is this what people refer to as notchy?"

This pretty much describes my problem. It does get better when the car has warmed up properly.

Is there anything I can do to sort this out.

Thanks

Air Honda

It's not a problem. A transmission is a mechanical device. Ours is particularly precise and tactile. When you shift, you are causing one spinning part to make contact with another part that's spinning at a different speed. The syncros do the best they can and do their jobs very well, but surely you don't actually think that you're not going to feel anything when you shift? This is not a tranny out of a '72 Datsun pickup.

After more searching it would seem changing the gearboxoil can help a lot. Would anyone know what the best oil would be?

Cheers

LOL Surf2k, reminds me of a UK VW car advert. Guy drives along with girlfriend and there is a squeaking noise but he can't workout where in the car it is. Well turns out it's his girlfriends earing! A drop of oil later and all sorted.

So have you checked your earings ?

Honda MTF would be a good tranny fluid to start with, cheap and easy to find. I personally switched over to Redline MTL and am liking it very much.

My '06 S2K has about 2400 miles on it... I've also noticed a notchy shift from 2nd to 3rd gear at lower RPMs. The "problem" completely dissapears if I'm shifting 2nd to 3rd at higher RPMs (>5K).

I guess this is normal?

Love the car and gearbox... I just figured it would take a little getting used to that's all.

Your degree of "notchiness" seems to be dependent upon the accuracy of your matching of revs when you shift. The more precise you are at matching revs, the less your syncros have to work. The less your syncros have to work, the less "notchy" your shifts will feel. In your case, you may be better at matching revs when you shift at higher rpms. It can be different for different people.

We are sometimes too quick to blame the equipment when the equipment is working harder to compensate for our own shortcomings.

i think i know what you are talking about. It literally feels like there is something blocking the tranny from entering 3rd gear (maybe the teeth aren't aligned). For my car it goes away when it is warm and it helps if you shift into 3rd by resting for a split sec in neutral and then quickly shifting into third.
