I think that most tranny oils will work OK and flow OK down to -15*C (+5*F).

YEP! That just put a tingle in my shorts (and it ain't the good kind, either!)
So did you have the GM stuff in when it got that cold? And how did the stick feel when you first started it in that cold?

For anyone thinking of doing this in the near future. Go to the store (Pep Boys?) and get one of those screw on things that fit an empty plastic 16oz Coke bottle. It has a foot long hose and a shut off valve and all you need to do is fill it with the MTF, close the valve, get under the car, stick the hose in the fill hole, open the valve and squeeze until you need to refill the bottle. I changed my tranny fluid to Synchromesh like this with the car jacked up on a stand (RF tire) in less than 30 minutes. Piece of cake.

Sort of off topic, but not really, since I liked the Synchromesh so much in my S, I went ahead and changed the fluid in my Del Sol too.

Thought I'd throw in my .02 cents!

After reading this thread a few days ago, I had GM synchromesh put in today. I have an '02 that's plagued with the 2nd gear notchiness, 2nd gear grind and 3rd gear clunk. I can definitely feel a difference from the first drive out. It got rid of my 3rd gear "clunk" completely, but my 2nd gear notchiness is still there for me. Maybe it'll get smoother in a few days as I drive the car around more. It's not as bad as before though - before, I felt like I had to always jam into 2nd gear because I was worried about getting the 2nd gear grind. After putting the new fluid in, it feels like it goes into 2nd a lot easier. It's not smooth as "butta," but definitely better. For an extra 20-30 $'s, the fluid was worth the buy for me

All hail the FAQ Writer.

Great 101, that's cool. I do all of that except:

1 - I just jack the car up in the front and have the stand there also. I like your idea better, though I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable if the jack failed and the car dropped. Would it be OK?
2 - I don't wear socks on my hands. (I was cracking up when I saw this pic because I was picturing your avatar changing the fluid). LOL

I use the wratchet 'extension' leverage trick too because I always got tired of not being able to get the oil pan bolt loose on my cars without busting a nut.

You didn't change your tranny fluid just for this, did you? j/k
