Default November06 Issue of Road and Track

I should know better...but this may be cause for attention...

... the new (November) issue of Road and Track ??

Page 27 talks about and shows an image of what may be the 2008 S2000 - with perhaps the first real glimpse of it at the 2007 Toky Motor Show....

hmmm.....

yep, just picked up this issue from the mailbox.

2008 rumors indicate the S2000 will come back as a 2nd gen model. Not sure if the name will stay but supposedly Honda is developing the new NSX and S2k in parrallel.

"...those at Honda have vehemently denied that the S2000 is going away."

"The engine will probably be a 2.4 liter version of Honda's K24 inline-4, but don't discount the possibility of a 3.0 litre V6" the 4 banger is ~250 bhp at 7000 rpm, 180 lb.ft @ 4800.

I have the pic of the concept but scanner is busted.

What's news for me is the new 2008 Supra and the direction they're heading with it. Suppose to be based of the IS chassis and only 3200lbs, 350bhp, 290lb.ft. Could be priced cheaper than the current 350Z. Coming in both coupe and convertible (hardtop?)

I just don't see a V6 in the works - it goes against the S series style of inline 4's. And a K24 making 250hp wouldn't be anything to write home about. If you've read elsewhere in the last few days, Honda released some news saying that it has made some improvements to its VTEC system: VTEC Advanced - from what I read I thought it kinda sounded like BMW's VANOS. If I were to hedge any bets, I'd say that this newer VTEC system along with a heavily modified K24, and other goodies, would be a good candidate.

Funny they mentioned a K24 - I was doing a quick calculation in my head today as to what it would take for Honda to use a 2.4 (For some reason, seems the next logical progression for me - 2.0, 2.2, ...) and break their original benchmark of 120 hp/liter. If the "new" S2000 made 300hp from a 2.4, that would put it right at around 300hp, which sounds more like what Honda would do.

Now the development of the NSX and S2k in parallel actually makes sense on some levels to me. Techniques to boost structural rigidity good be implemented on both cars, and many parts specifically desgined for use in a lightweight sports car could be shared i.e. smaller ancillary components in the engine. The current S2000's EPS steering system was taken from the NSX which first debuted with the system.

However, IMO, the NSX seems like it will be transceding boundaries and be going into a whole different playing field. The next gen NSX will have a tremendoes reputation to live up to, and my gut feeling is that Honda will be busting out all stops with this one. I don't see too many similarities between a 150k NSX (projected cost) and a new S2000 (would cost 50k at most?).

Well, it remains to be seen. Honda is secretive about its cars no doubt. But we've seen too little of anything to make the claim of a next-gen S2000 within the next few years. At least Honda CEO Takeo Fujui has made a mention of the next NSX having a V10, and what not, but not one scrap of info has come from his mouth on the S2000. The SSM concept came out in 95, 4-5 before the first production S2k saw the light of day. IMO, the next gen of S roadster will undoubtedly come and won't take 30+ years like it did to go from S800 to S2000. But I see 2009.5 as the earliest possible release date.

A thread referencing this exact magazine article was locked earlier today. Would imagine this thread will have the same fate. If only we could see into the future. Too bad car mags are wrong just as often if not more often than they are right.

Don't take magazine gossip to heart. Motortrend claimed the 07 had Imola Orange in the US as an option.

well, if they use a taller block, like the K24s, they might be able to get the redline back to 9000 as the rods will be longer, with significantly less side loading on the cylinders (btw, this is exactly how the new Z got its redline raised...a taller block with longer rods). 280HP would probably be easy with such a motor.

I'm all for an engine like the RDX, though, optimized for high RPM with a low pressure turbo, say 6-7psi. I think getting over 300HP from such a thing is probably not too difficult.

Working alongside Comptech would be neat, too. I don't think it's likely, though.

I would prefer they kept an inline 4. A 5 would be neat, but I think the balance issues would kill that. A small DOHC V6 would satisfy those wanting torque, but I think that will make the car too heavy (as the car must grow to accomodate a DOHC V engine).

Why would it be too heavy? A Z4 has a I6 and comes pretty close to the S2000 in weight. It handles pretty damn well to boot.
