Is the NSX worth the money?
I am not trying to be a troll, but I was just thinking about the upcoming Japan/ US sports car market and things seem like they are headed back to the way they were back in the early/ mid 90's. All these big engine sports cars are on the horizon. Well, as you know, Honda will be releasing the new NSX soon and I heard that the price tag will be in the 90's. I heard that the car will not be getting a V8 and that it will not even be 400 hp. The new base corevette is suppose to be 400 hp, the viper is 500, and the new mustang is 390. All of these cars are priced under 50k. I don't consider the NSX to be "exotic" becasue... well I just don't. It's just not in the same league as a Ferrari or high end porsche or Z8 etc. I drove a 93 NSX with 60k miles and was not impressed at all. Personally, the S2000 handles better and the ride feels stiffer. The power of the NSX didn't even compare to a corvette. So why pay 90K?

I do agree that I do see more Porsches than NSX's, but do you think that it's becasue if most people had 90k they would rather purchase a porsche or a used ferrari. Personally, If I had 90k, I'd get a 98 F355. It's not as reliable as the NSX, but if you are spending 90k on a sports car, I'm sure you have at least 2 beaters on hand. I am courious to see what the actual remodeled NSX will look like. From the drawings, it looks like a Ferrari 360. Is it suppose to be coming out in 2004? I don't remember.

High end Porsche? So does that mean only the 996 Turbo, the GT2, and the other high end GT series Porsche's which aren't even mass produced? BTW I will take a GT1.
While I agree it may not be in the same realm as a Ferrari I don't even know how you could possibly throw the Z8 in there? Have you driven/ridden in a Z8 or a 97+ NSX? You can't even compare the two. And your post hints at "overpriced." How is the Z8 not? IMO all BMW's are vastly overpriced for what you get. I don't care if it is German engineering; it won't get me to fork over an extra $10k for a car. The Z8 is a big joke IMO. It maybe a nice looking roadster but the weight is unacceptable.
I wasn't as impressed w/the NSX as I expected to be. Maybe my expectations were too high!
After driving the S for over a year, I love the accelleration feel--more akin to a motorcycle.
The NSX is so refined and smooth, yes, like on rails, that you don't get the same feeling of exhileration.
When I returned to the S, every shift brings forth a grin!
So for me, the NSX is not where I'd want my money.
The other cars you bring up aren't exotic enough either quite frankly...but the NSX is a step above all of them in refined engineering.
I think you're under-comparing in that case...
However, it's all a way too personal decision. Drive it, love it, buy it if it speaks to your heart.
Enjoy,
Randy

A friend of mine has a 91 NSX. IMHO it drives much better than my 02 S2000. Both handling and acceleration with the NSX is terrific. Not that I am unhappy with the S2000, because driving has become a joy since getting it. The NSX is just in a different class.
NO, IMO I would not want 90k in an NSX, I mean, it is only a Honda. I would much rather have a '03 Cobra, or a Z06. I rode with a friend in his slightly modified '03 cobra, and it is unbelievably fast for a mostly stock car (Low 11's on street tires). I would put a few more thousand with the 90k and get a Ferrari, or something.

I, for one, am getting worn out by people who equate the desirability of a car by the size of its engine displacement and, therefore, the amount of petrochemicals it wastes. When the new NSX debuts, you may very well change your mind. Based on what I've been reading, it will have some technological advances that will redefine the standards for judging sports car performance in a world of increasingly scarce resources.
