Offset can this be changed?

I received my rims today and all is well except the brake problem (other thread) which has gone away. Bt after washing my car I noticed the rim is about 1 half cm out of the body when looking from above. The fronts are 17x7 and the rears 18x8 both with what I measure as a 40 mm offset. They told me the were going to be 45mm offset. Can this be changed? Or is that not possible. f not I guess I'll have to return them.

Mingster,

I'm confused too?? On my car are 40mm offset
wheels. I was promised 45mm. Should I just return them for the 45's or is there a way to get this done by maybe grinding down the center plate?

I'd go back and get the right offset rims. If they stick out of the body it isn't right...unless thats the way you want it. If you lower the car any, you'll risk rubbing the wheel well. Most wheel pros would tell you that they don't recommend grinding anything on the rims, especially if the right size is available.

Can someone simply define offset for my (sometimes) slow brain to comprehend?

Thanks

the distance the wheel mounting surface is from the centerline of the said wheel. Positive offset sucks wheel/tire inboard neg. has wheel/tire going outboard.
