I wonder what it is about the S2000 that causes mechanics to leave the oil cap off? I took mine to a Honda Dealer for the last oil change and they left the cap off. When I got in the car I noticed more induction noise. I thought they had left the air cleaner cover off. When I got home and checked, there was oil all over and no cap. Luckily, the mechanic left it on the black sill on top of the fire wall so I didn't have to hunt all over for it.

If NO then you have a fine line of who should pay for the transmission being pulled out. This is a pretty common problem and we have seen a few of these situations before with missing oil caps.
Good point. The Oil cap incident happend so long ago that it did not cross my mind to mention it, however and from what they aer telling me, ther was no other way to get to the cap as it was wedged and not readily visible. The more I think about it the more it becomes clear that it should not have cost $700

Maybe you should work out some compromise where the Honda dealer writes off 1/3, the service station pays 1/3 and you pay 1/3. I'd work for something better but take that as a fall back position.

I am not sure why they are telling you there was no way to get it out. I would have to check to see how many but I think it might be 6 times we have seen this and of the 6 at no time did we need to pull the trans out. It sounds to me like they have never come across this before and desided to pull the trans to service it. They are quoting book time which should not be used in this case. I would bet the trans never came completly out of the car. JMO

Just one of the reasons I change my own oil. That being said -- good luck!

Make the dealer show you the flat rate time in his book. I believe the book time for R & R clutch is about 5 hrs so just to R & R transmission (which you must do to replace clutch) should be about 4.5 hrs. Or call another dealer and get charge for R & R transmission. I think dlr. is ripping you (or the service station) off.

If you want to get realistic. when removing the trans you drop the front cradle 3.5" to access the top bolts on the trans which is far as you need to go to get a stuck oil cap out which probably hit the ground by then. Labor to do that should be between 2 and 2.5 hrs. If you still have a problem with the dealer call 1-800-999-5901 and submit your complaint

SanMarinoCpe, Thanks for the info, I think the problem with the dealer is that they were not really looking for an oil cap, they were ready to do warranty work and expected to find something wrong with the powertrain. In hindsight they should have stopped work after finding the oil cap but they decided to keep on checking to make sure things were ok. I also took a look at the clutch and it had very little friction surface left (a couple of mm at most) so I decided to get that changed and make the most of an unfortunate situation.
