Default oil check

Just been reading a few pages and it seems like I will have to check the oil when I get my car Saturday, never had to with my beemer just had it serviced. Do I have to keep an eye on the oil every week? Does it burn oil ?

You're kidding right? You should check the oil on every car/truck/van. If it has oil you should check it.

2,500 miles on mine so far and has burned almost no oil. Its down about 2 little x marks on the stick and that's only just happened.

Yes, start practicing now lifting up your hood and looking for the dipstick; then look at the markings where the oil level is; keep this practice going until you get your S.

You will have to use this motion frequently.

No Not kidding Rai, never checked my oil in the bmw and its done 80,000 now it doesnt burn a drop. Its costs a fortune to fill it up though, 12 pounds a litre of mobil one so its good it doesnt burn oil. I was just asking if I need to check it every week?

its a bimmer (sorry - thats a peeve of mine)

anyway - yes - check it frequently - doesn't have to be when you get gas - it can be at the end of the day when you bring it home and tuck it in for the night. I check it every weekend before I take it for any fun drives. I also check the tire pressures religiously as well - a couple psi here and there can make a huge difference in handling and tracking.

just remember - its not a touring sedan - but its not a tempermental exotic either - don't let checking the oil every week or so scare you off.

My friend has a M3 and it uses a funky 5W (can't remember) synthetic $12 a quart. He's had to add a few quarts so far. I guess it depends on the specific car.

Every car is different so it's a good idea to check like every 1000 miles on any car.

The S2000 it's a good idea to check every 250-500 miles.

Does Winston the butler do it for you or do you just take your car to a dealership for oil changes?

And what exactly is so difficult about checking oil anyhow?

I have used 1 qt since new, now at 5500 miles (changed at 4000). It is definitely tapering off to no consumption, very typical of this car. Check it at every fill up. Once you learn it's consumption rate, you can spread it out some. You've got time, do some searches here and read well about break-in, and READ THE MANUAL.
