Default Oil consumption and Indicators

Well, i was at the gas station today after driving about 20 miles, (a few VTECs) and looked at my oil. I removed the stick, wiped it, dipped it, and found the oil level to be right below the X's. Now my question is, wouldn;t the low oil light go on if it was really that low? what do i do know? i am 250 miles from my 3750 oil change/checkup. Thanks, Mike

I was wondering the same thing. After 20,000 miles, oil consumption is still there and going strong... wtf

You need to top off with dino 10W30 and continue to do so as required till your next oil change. The oil light is an indication of oil "pressure" NOT oil level. Your oil light won't come on till it's basically too late. You can still generate oil pressure with only a couple of qts in the pan - as long as there is enough to cover the oil pickup tube.

Although manual says to check oil at every fill-up, I do it weekly and have never been more than an x or 2 low. As this engine uses oil, and as this subject has been talked about many times, i'm surprisedpeople don't check the oil level on a regular basis.

A lot of people don't read the owner's manual or don't believe it when it tells them something. A co-worker has a new Civic SiR with about 5K miles on it. I asked if he checks the oil regularly and he says, "It's a Honda. Don't need to worry about it." When I wasn't looking, he went out and checked, came back in and said he couldn't see any oil on the dipstick.

Every car is different but I've use one quart every 1,700 miles since day one and I'm approaching 10,000 miles on the car. I always check it cold while parked in the same flat parking space in my garage following every gas tank fill up. The thing I've noticed is it will stay on full for quite some time but when it does drop it drops very fast. I'm at a loss to say why it doesn't just gradually drop down since my driving patterns are always the same. I drive the car like it was designed to be driven.
