Default Oil usage - Should it use this much?

I have a 2003 S2000 with 6k miles. The oil usage has been faily low until recently. I check everytime I fill up with gas (just like the manual states). The oil was changed last at a Honda Dealership, and I have topped it off with either Penzoil or Castrol GTX.

Last week it used about a quarter quart between fillups. (1/4 quart)
This week it used about a half quart between fillups. (1/2 quart)

Is this a sign that there is something is wrong or is this fluctuation like ones you guys have seen. A little worried because I have never owned a Honda that drinks oil like this.

I have checked for leaks (none). I Vtec daily, but not obsessively. Just usually driving my 10 mile commute to work.

It's normal.

My '02's oil consumption slowed down considerably after 10,000 miles.

You are doing it right. Just keep an eye on the oil level...

I have found that the oil usage is not consistent over fairly short distances, like one or two tankfuls. There may be no drop, and then suddenly a drop of a couple of x's on the stick. Over longer periods, it is much more consistent, and I can reliably predict that after 2500 miles or so, I will be right about needing a quart. Sorry to say that 18,000 miles has not resulted in a drastic decrease in this consumption level, which is pretty much now what it was when the car was first delivered. It is evidently neither excessive nor abnormal, and I can definitely live with it.

FYI - You should top off with the same brand oil. Foaming could occur coz of the different additives.

You got yours changed at the dealer. I think the honda oil is rebagded Mobil Oil. not sure. Get an extra 2 Quart when your at the deal for the oil change.

I use my '03 as a daily driver. It has 18,000 plus miles of mixed highway and stop and go driving. I average about 25-26 MPG and use about 3/4 Qt. of Mobil1 oil every 3000 miles. Other member's cars will vary according to the car and usage type. -Ken

I bought my MY00 with 29,000 miles. After 3000 miles the oil level did not change. I changed to synthetic oil and it started using oil pretty darn bad. Just like it started using oil it stopped with no further consumption. I now have about 37,000 and it never needs any topping up.

While most of my driving is on the interstate I do get in some pretty bad traffic jams routinely. I also ran a few autocross races in it.
