this horrible sound came from the rear like to steel rods being slammed together I said to myself "f*ck this is not good".......I decided to drive her around for a while and could not duplicate the problem and all seems normal. I have had some clunkiness and noises before but wrote them off as normal, this sound was not normal.
Any ideas on what this could be? My guess is the same prob as VaporTrail had.

I've read of a couple people having a faulty reverse gear. Maybe yours is on the verge of snapping?

I believe that some people have reported this type of noise before after the car has sat for some time. It could be the parking brake or it could be the LSD.

Just a couple of suggestions.

If you washed your car and then put it away with the emergency/hand/parking brake on and the rotors were starting to oxidize, there will be a horrible sound as you start to back up and disc pads become unstuck from the rotors.

I've done this before and it's startling to say the least. I no longer put the hand brake on after I've washed the car.

This may also happen if the humidity is high where you live.

Charlie, Was your car washed before you parked it with parking brake on, or did you go through rain prior? The pads will stick to the disk when brakes applied wet and left to dry. No harm done if that was the case. Happened to me twice.

Ahhh yes in fact we had just returned from a trip to W Virginia (fantastic roads in the mountains by the way)and the next day I washed the car then put her away. Lets hope thats what it was. Thanks, feeling better now.

Same thing happened to me. Really loud. Sounded like a gun going off. Scared the H--- out of me. Now I don't set the brake after washing.

Don't let the sound change your mind on setting parking brake. Having the sound is a lot better than the car rolling down the driveway or worse. The sound is just that, a bad sound, but no damage is done. Nothing worse than knocking the car out of gear with no parking brake while you're sitting in the passenger seat cleaning the dash.
