Last night on my drive home from work relatively late (9pm) i noticed a car coming up on my rear left side rather quickly. Thinking this might be a good challenge on an open highway i prepared myself for a good time. It was the BMW M coupe and slowed down right next to my side...i figured he did want to race so i dropped a gear and took off and he went no where...would have been fun to test out the s2k against the M coupe but it never happened. On the brighter side of the news...an eclipse GSX tried to pass me on the shoulder of all places on my way to work...needless to say it never happened.

Oooh, too bad. Wish it would've happened. Saw an M Coupe last night lined up with a Mustang GT at a light. The Coupe went, but the GT didn't, but later on decided to catch up. Didn't see the ending. Wonder how the S2000 would've performed against the M Coupe. How would this not be an on-topic subject, old man?

from a standing start, unless you can do one of them 7K rpm launches, the M would eat the S2000s lunch; don't know if you would ever catch up if the M driver can shift worth a damn. I used to have an M roadster (may she rest in peace) and there's torque just everywhere - I think the M has more torque idling than the S2000 does at peak. In addition, reaching VTEC may not necessarily catch you up - the M has VANOS, but you don't get the awesome surge you get with VTEC. The M is easier to drive faster.

That being said, these cars are close enough that it could come down to the better driver.

The BMW M Coupe...

My nominee for the ugliest car made today.

Proof positive that the designers at BMW are only human...

S2000 Driver...i would have to differ with you on that one...personally i love the look of the M coupe and wouldn't get the roadster over the coupe if i went the BMW route. I think the M coupe is highly underrated as compared to the roadster...but to each his own as far as styling goes...personally i don't like the look of the TT and all the critics seem to love the style...don't know what's special about a flatenned out VW Beetle?

That said i know he would take me from a standing start the torque differential is incomparable but we where on the highway and i was already doing 70 which puts us at a more even playing field...and i'm sure it would have come down to the driver which is why i was dying to test out this little scenerio...it's no fun racing a civic or some other car that most likely has no shot at winning but when you get this even a match it makes for a fun time.

If you guys have seen the Best Motoring VCD featuring the S2000 when it first came out, you'd be surprised at what cars beat the S around a race track with experienced drivers. Although the S2000 they drove only had 400miles on it and wasn't broken in completely yet, the M roadster smoked it by a great margin around the track! The M roadster was in the same class as an NSX, RX7 typeS and Other Japanese super cars. The S2000 on the other hand got left behind and wasn't in the same league. Now, this was with experienced drivers on a Japanese course. Couple of other cars beat the S handedly too, but I can't quite remember which ones, I think Evo6 and R34 Skyline GTR. They did come back to say the S2000 was one of the best open top cars on the market today though. One other thing, they even put down the SO2's. Said that the tires were old and outdated..?

Well, I have had an encounter with an M-Coupe.

Scenario:
We were on Beltway 8, which is a TOLL road. We had just gone through one of the toll booths through the EZ-TAG lane. He was in front of me and we were going about 75-80mph. I was hoping he'd try to test me so I was already VTECing in 3rd gear. He took off and I promptly followed. To my surprise, the M didn't leave me like I thought it would. In fact, I was on his tail all the way to 145mph when he stopped accellerating.

We both eased off and he pulled into the right lane. I looked over and he was smiling giving me a thumbs up. I did the same and that was that.

So we can keep up with the M Coupe at speed, but probably not from a dead stop.

rocketman

Road & Track Sept 2000 Direct comparo

S2000 14.1 quarter
BMW M 14.0 quarter

I wouldn't say this is eating lunch.

I think people forget torque makes you feel faster.

It was in Japanese with tiny english subtitles and it was pretty tough to watch the race and read at the same time but that seems reasonable. Seems us Americans always get the sanitized versions of cars... Damn the enviroment, global warming, all that other Greenpeace crap

The US spec M roadster has 225, 245hp right? Isn't it coming with the new M3 engine soon?
