Is It Only A Car?

Some will say it is. It is the flavor of the month, soon something newer, hotter will replace it and the S2000 will be traded in or sold. They also will say it is expendable and use it up and move on.
Maybe they are right, it is after all only steel, aluminum, leather and plastic.
Of course works of art are only paint and canvas so why are they treasured by us? Can a car be art?
I think that any product of Man's creation that evokes an emotional response, inspires passion can be considered art. A case can be made for the S2000 that it is "art". How do you feel when you see the car, how do you feel when you drive it? When you are not driving it do you think about driving it?
Some (most) cars are utilitarian appliances for transportation. It is unlikely that your minivan will inspire passion. Some cars (a very special few) do inspire a passion in your soul. These are the cars of legend. These cars reflect the passion of the engineers who created them. The guys who designed the Ferrari 360 Modena loved automobiles and were passionate about their creation. I humbly submit that the guys who designed the S2000 were equally passionate about their baby also.
When craftsmen are passionate about their work craft oftentimes turns to art. When they pour their hearts and soul into their work it can transcend excellent design and craftsmanship and become art.
When you drive your S2000 does your heart beat just a little bit faster? Do you have a big smile on your face? When you wash and wax your S2000 does your hand linger along the fine lines and curves of the body? These are physical reactions.
When a poet writes a poem the object is to transmit a feeling or mood he has in his soul when he is writing it to you the reader when you read it. He wants to evoke certain emotions within you. When they designed the S2000 they wanted to evoke certain emotions within the driver.
I think they have succeeded and because of that,...I think they have created a work of automotive art.
So to me,...No,...it is NOT just a car.

It's just a car, dude!
BTW. Works of art that are reprinted 50,000 times are not cherished at all. They are tossed out when they get dusty. If you had the first S2000... now THAT might be different, but it would also have lots of bugs and manufacturing flaws.

Oh I don't know. There are plenty of mass produced items in the Museum of Modern Art. They are being recognized for excellence in design.
The Gugenhiem Museum hosted an "art" exhibition titled "The Art of the Motorcycle" featuring a large collection of motorcycles from the past 100 years.
So what is art?

Screw the other guys!! Bieg, dude...I don't know what's gotten into you lately but I have to, again, agree with you.
Art was once defined to me as "Something that makes you think, something that makes you love, something that makes you live or something that makes you believe." The funny thing is that so few things make you do all four at the same time. My S2000 is one of the few things that makes me think, live, love and believe all at the same time. Mr. Honda...thanks.

My S2000 is not just car to me.
I came from a 'not so rich' but happy family. When I was in high school, my mom worked in a garment factory earning $200 a week which was only income in our family at the time. Back then, all I can think about was how can I earn money to get a car. Of course, a sports car. But situation did not light up for quite some time.
During my college year, I worked as a bus boy in a restaurant. I saved and sold my computer to buy a greenish '73 mustang convertible for $500. That was my first car registered under my name. I was so happy with the despite of trouble it caused me. Its extention pipe & muffler would make swiss cheese ashamed. police used to kick me out of their jurisdiction because of it. Its streering wheel was disaster waiting to happen. There weren't A/C. I don't know what happened to rear window so I had cover it up somehow. Floor was all rusted out so I could do Flinstone stuff. Some of my friends always joked about the car but I still loved the car because this was my first car. Unfortunately, due to financial reason, I could not keep the car after 5 months. Since then I bought few other car. I chipped in some but most payments were made by my parents.
When I saw S2000 at NY autoshow in '99, I just fell in love with this car. I just have to have this car. This car actually became my motivation to work. It was my dream. It's needless to say how happy I was when I got my S. It still makes me smile when I look at it.
This time, I'm paying for it. I won't get any help from anybody because it's mine.
It's a simbol of my achivement. My hard work. My determination. My passion went into this c a r.
To me, IT IS NOT JUST CAR.
cheers,,

S2000 to me is not just a car... most of the time... if someone backs into it, then it's just a car, meaning I am not going to hunt the guy down. But to me, this car is not just a car... it's something I love and charish and it certainly something that marks my "success" in my career at 24 years of age. The stook makes me feel good, I don't think "just cars" do that.
But it doesn't have to be expensive to be more than just a car. My crx is more than just a car to me. I love that thing as much as I love the s2k... I spent many hours in a garage doing ALL the work on that car myself... ALL of it... including motor swap, well every last thing. It's got all of my sweat, blood, anger, happiness in it. It's not "art", but it's not just a car... it's proof of all the hardword which I have put into it.

To me and most of us it is more than just a car. To most Ferrari owners the S2000 is possibility a curiosity but just a car. Even to a lot of SUV drivers it is just a car. Also to say that the Japanese are as passionate as Italians sounds a bit ludicrous. Also you (and me and all of us) are always comparing the S2000 to a Ferrari. How many times do you think anyone owning a 360 Modena would compare it to S2000?
