Default over redline in 3rd

i was driving tonight and shifted from 4th@around 6000-6500 rpm to 3rd, where the rpm hit 9000+. the rpm was bouncing in the 9000+ zone and the blinking red for a a couple seconds before i upshifted again. i wonder if i did any damage...i was going downhill too and flooring it when i shifted from 4th to 3rd.

there doesnt seem to be any ill-effects but im not sure. it does feel a little different but i think its all in my mind. im trying to remember the speed i was going when i downshifted but cant remember. all i remember is the redline blinking and the putting back into 4th.

If its still running and VTeching w/out making noise..your probably okay. Check your oil before driving for the next week or so (everytime you get in) and make sure its not changing. If not, IMHO your probably okay... doesn't mean I'm right, but if something is drastically wrong, you'll probably know it.

If you did any damage to the engine if you redlined it, you would hear "strange" noises coming from the car at the low-end. Someone told me what bends in your engine when you redline it... but I just can't remember. But I do remember him telling me about a sort of knocking noise if it did bend.

The word AJ Spoon Guy is looking for is valves. If there's no odd sounds coming from the car, just thank your lucky stars and be careful next time!

Most likely, you would bend the valves if you over-revved your engine by downshifting past your engine's redline. Keep an eye out for the check engine light. That may be your next clue....

i took it out again just now and revved each gear from 1st to 4th to redline to see if anything felt or sound different...nothing out of the ordinary. the engine sounds fine at idle but then again, im still not used to all the sounds coming from this 4 cylinder engine (used to driving i6s and v8s. anyway, from 1st through 4th redline, vtech sounds normal, engine sounds normal. i should be thankful. i think when i downshifted from 4th to 3rd, i might have made it just under the cutoff and the limiter was just making its appearance...i hope.

for some reason, the s2k feels so fragile when pushed hard...im afraid ill break it (i probably will if i over-rev it again )

i still feel like something is wrong...again, its probably in my head.

I think the reason the engine feels so fragile is the driver feels the engine is so fragile. Takes a lot of getting used to...some track time will do that for ya

Anyway, if you bent some valves, you'll lose compression in at least 1 cylinder. You can tell by a rough idle when RPM's are at 800-1000, shifter vibrates more than normal. You can't really tell if anything's wrong when you're not idling. Next time you take it in for service ask for a compression test...if everything is within tolerances, then you are A-ok. This is in addition to checking your oil every chance you get, like amartin mentioned above

BTW, were you intentionally downshifting or were you trying to upshift to 5 and hit 3rd instead?

I think you are fine...I think you landed on 9000-9400RPM some where around there. Considering the rev limiter is around 9200, your engine shouldn't have taken much damage
