if this was in your dream...then rest assured, your car is fine. if not...2-3 seconds is a long time! isn't ap2 2nd gear redline at 58mph or something?

Well, downshifting to 2nd at ~71 mph in an AP2 will spin your engine to just over 10,000 RPM. Assuming 2-3 second estimate was correct, your engine would have easily reached 10k. I wouldn't worry if you hit ~9k, but at 10k personally I would not hesitate to have the entire valve train inspected by a knowledgeable mechanic, assuming you are not comfortable doing it yourself. Need to check retainers, keepers, and even rocker arms for cracks or deformation (some people have cracked rockers without damaging anything else oddly enough). better safe than sorry.. if you damaged something you run the risk of dropping a valve later on and ruining more than a few nights sleep

Save yourself 10k on a new motor buy spending <$500 now (more like $300). Follow exactly what vtec9 said - however, I'd go one step further - I'd just go ahead and replace the valve retainers anyways since they are relatively cheap.

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE. PLEASE. Just tow it to a reputable, competetent mechanic and have them do the needful. Again, DO NOT DRIVE THE FREAKIN CAR. DON't START IT. Just have it towed on a flatbed.

True dat. If you drop a valve due to a cracked retainer you will be really really sorry you did.

I went from 6th to third doing about 95 and although it did not pop the motor then, it started the engine down the short road to its death.

You be the judge, but like stated above, a decent some of money now to check things out and replace some items may save you butt-loads of $$ and time down the road.

My $.34 worth.
sorry about your situation

AP1? Your profile says 2004

AP1 would make it better.

71mph in 2nd gear:
AP1 ~9.6k RPM
AP2 ~10.1k RPM
