Default Parking in gear

Ok, after reading some on the handbrake threads, it's time for me to park in gear.

One problem... how? please bear with me, I'm a manual tranny noob. I can drive the car fine, but can someone give me the steps to park in gear. Thanks.

Just don't forget that the car is in gear when you start it.

Parking in gear locks up the transmission so the wheels don't roll. You wouldn't leave an automatic in neutral, you put it in park. Put it in gear , while the clutch is still depressed turn off the car.

The car won't start if the clutch pedal isn't depressed. The problem occurs when you start the car, then let the clutch out without taking it out of gear!

park it in 1st gear if your front is facing uphill
park it in reverse if your front is facing downhill

The thing is, I don't think the uphill downhill thing really matters. As an experiment, I was on a sharp downhill slope and I put it in first and reverse and they both held. Just make sure you only use those two gears, the others won't be able to hold your care enough.

Thanks guys I see a couple of methods mentioned, so I assume they all do the same job safely.

Ok, here's what I got.

- Pull into spot or final resting place
- While stopped, pull handbrake
- Put car into first (clutch still depressed)
- Turn car off
- Release clutch

Warning: Don't forget car is in first when starting up again
