Default Performance Chip on EBay

What you guy's think of this one?
Honda S2000 NL Performance Chip / Module NEW

The G-Box is a BRAND NEW product just hitting the market! The module was designed to directly compete with the JET V-Chip at a significantly reduced cost. The G-Box not only competes with the higher priced V-Chip, but OUTPERFORMS other competing modules and chips from companies like SLP Engineering and RKRacing.

Performance Gains Averaging 8 - 12Hp!

"desribed as a CHIP but I received a tape roll and resitor I could have done that"

Read some of the feedback (also all items are private).

I wouldn't send this guy $40, I doubt you could notice the HP difference anyway, if there was any. With the # of negative comments vs total, I doubt this would work.

These are not actual chips, they are strictly a resistor. It connects to your air intake temp sensor and changes the voltage the ECU sees. The ECU thinks it's pulling in colder air than what's actually there and won't retard the timing as much. While I'm sure the change is mild, someone could send a wrong resistor, timing isnt retarded enough, and you start getting some serious knock...ECU sees knock, retards timing, and you're potentially worse off than when you started.

I hate these scams, and I wish E-Bay would start to do something about them.

TRD does the same for toyota with the water temp. sensor.
They add a resistor that can be changed form inside the car.

I am a sucker for low cost horsepower claims. I will have this thing dynoed in a couple of weeks and let you know the outcome.

I'm dubious that this "chip" will actually benefit our motors. Our ECUs are tuned so finely from the get go, that I suspect any mediocre addition will hinder rather than help HP output.

Nonetheless, I look forward to seeing dyno results.

J, PLEASE tell me you are joking?!

If you absolutely MUST do this mod, go to Radio Shack and pick up the resistor for 50 cents...don't pay $20 for someone else to ship it to you. Yes, this DOES give you more horsepower, but at the cost of reduced margin for error on the ECU side. There's nothing to test here, it's no different than using a VAFC to change the air/fuel mixture (OK, so it's a little different).

V, No, this mod will work, but at what price? Our ECU's are tuned for a variety of factors, but one of them being fuel economy and emissions. That's why VAFC's can usually get you another 10-20 HP, because you're telling the fuel pump/engine to do something different than the ECU is telling it to do. These "mods" are simply bypassing the VAFC route and making the ECU do the communicating (although now it's making decisions upon false data).

The seller specifically warns against "other sellers" who are just offering resistors, including this diatribe (edited down):

``Before you buy from one of the other sellers, selling one of these "chips" or timing kits on eBay, READ THIS FIRST! They are NOT selling computer chips, performance modules or timing kits. They are selling simple resistors from Radio Shack, they will come in a regular white envelope, taped to a fuzzy sheet of instructions! YOU CAN BUY THESE RESISTORS AT RADIO SHACK FOR UNDER 20 CENTS A PIECE...WHY DO YOU THINK THEY DON'T POST A PICTURE OF THEIR "PERFORMANCE CHIP"? BECAUSE ITS NOT A CHIP!''

Notably, however, in his entire auction listing, he never specifically claims that HIS product is NOT just a resistor, and in fact never even refers to it as a "chip"! He calls it a "module", "the G-Box", etc., but never a "chip".

My suspicion is that it's fundamentally just a resistor, but with perhaps a couple of other resistors in a simple divider or limiter circuit to help prevent knocking under high-heat conditions. So it's a 60- or 80-cent part, not a 20-cent part.

I recently purchased one of these timing kits from ebay.

Seriously, it is just a resistor like everyone says. It didn't even come in a box. It was mailed inside a letter envelope.

I haven't installed it into the S yet. Don't know if I even want to. Basically it tells you disconnect the battery and to locate the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) and then to plug the resistor in and then to tape it up with electrical tape (yes I did say electrical tape). Over all I only spent eight bucks to learn this lesson.

Don't buy stuff like this from ebay. A cheap fix for a couple more horsepower may result in more dollars later to fix.

Best solution and advice is not to mess with perfection!!
