Periodically Repaint or Protective Cover?

A low car in Arizona is subject to frequent rock chips on the front bumper, hood, fenders and mirrors.

What are are your thoughts on periodic repainting VS a protective cover layer such as Expel?

Small dings and chips can be taken care of with a little work, time, and knowledge. Some shops specialize in that if you are so inclined.

The Expel seems to work well on headlights. I have never used a film layer for protection although the original owner did install some on the door edges. They seem to have worked well but look like they might be ready for replacement. He also had a tint installed on the side and back windows (high quality professional job) that have done a great job protecting the interior, made it difficult for potential thieves to see inside, and made the car cooler in the hot summer months.

Lots of people swear by the films.

Front bumper is tough because you can really drag it on a low curb. I have used a rattle can matched paint (3 step process for Rio Yellow) on the bottom edge. Easy to blend and it is not noticeable in that location anyway.

Headlight covers are $60.

Repaint and then cover in clear bra.

Just like they've been doing since ancient times.

Or...just ignore the chips? Seems to work for a few years at least.

The part that gets dinged the most is the bottom inch or two of the bumper. Maybe just cover that? The other thing you can do is to leave it bare for a few years, and then cover the dings with a lip for a few years, and then start over again with some over-spray on the damaged areas of the bumper and lip.
