Bingo, we have a winner. If you look closely, my left hand is not gripping the steering wheel normally. I have a small button in my hand in a position that I can push the button with my thumb. The wire goes up my sleeve and around the seat-back to the camera.

Ldog: Since you have red interior, I would definitely go with yellow cargo straps.

The road is Mulholland Hiway just off of Pacific Coast Hiway. Not much traffic on that stretch of road usually.

Very nice indeed. You can almost feel that curve coming up in the third pic ... if you can relate to that

This doesn't look safe to me at all. This could never be used at a track.

It is a great view, but is it worth the potential for problems?

A similar approach would be to get a roll bar installed and get a "race-car" camera mount. Put the mount on the rear crossmember. That would give similar shots and be alot safer.

meat:

I agree, this setup is not meant for the track. The trick to the pics are moderate speeds, but slow shutter speeds. At one point during the run, the tripod head rotated around and the camera was pointing at the trunk. Theoretically, if that happens a few times, the tripod head can unscrew itself from the tripod. The tripod-to-car mounting is very sturdy. Had to get it sturdy to keep camera shake down.

Great shots... good job of picking a shutter speed that allowed stop action of the car but blurred the passing scenery to show speed!!
