On May 7, I'll be leaving on a 2-week, 4000+ mile trip through all 11 western states and at least 10 national parks. I'll be driving my S2000 alone and with the top down as much as possible. I have the overall route planned out, but will be finding hotels each evening rather than making reservations ahead of time.

I'm looking for advice on what I should be sure to take along or things I should do in the areas of car maintenance.

I plan to take along everything but water that I would need to wash the car. There's no way I would take it to a car wash. I'll find somewhere with a hose as often as I can to get the bugs and dirt off.

I have a Mingster Aero Screen to reduce cockpit turbulance, and a car cover for when it's parked, but that's about it.

Other than taking along lots of money, sunscreen, and film for the camera, what would you suggest I have with me?

(By the way, I just finished 2 other trips in 12 states in cars more appropriate for freeway travel. My goal is less than 10% freeway for this trip.)

Take enough oil with you. You don't state how new the car is but mine used about 4 liters of oil in the first 7000 KM.

i did a cross country 3500 in 5 days in my baby. Actually bring a few liters of water both for yourself and in case you lose coolant. The air gets dry with the top down and constant 130 mph winds.

I would take a can of spare tire. If you develop a slow leak (especially a rear tire) it is much more convenient to use that than taking off the front tire and putting it on the back and putting the spare up front. You can then drive to a tire place and have it repaired. Just make sure that you tell them that you used that stuff because it can make quite a mess when removing the tire.

Sounds weird, but maybe a list of Honda dealers (phone numbers at least) along your route?

Some of you may know about the BMW MOA "Anonymous List." It is a listing of all BMW "Motorcycle Owners of America" club members willing to help travellers AND dealer locations. Seems like a real good idea but I suspect we Honda drivers are not as tight a group.

I don't have much to add to what the others have suggested. However, I thought I would note that the trip sounds way cool and that I am quite envious. Have a great two weeks.

Thanks for the hints so far. These have been quite helpful. I'll report on how it went when I get back. I might even be able to give a "half-time report" if things go well.

Are you going to try to meet any owners along the way?

Maybe a carbra, lots of music and bring a radar detector if you are inclined to exceed the posted limits.
