Default Please Help:car wobble and shakes at high speeds

I recently got in to an accident. Everything was fixed and there wasn't really any problem with the engin or drivetrain. However, at high speeds( around 80-100mph) the car wobbles already, I never had this problem before at this low of speed. It usally occured at around 105-120mph before the accident. The car had an alignment and new tires put on after the accident. Could it be that one of the rim is slightly bent from the accident? I did go up on a pretty high curve from the accident. Any input will be helpful.
Thanks
Larry

if the wheel was bent out of shape, it would have been discoverd on the balance machine.

however... do something -check the wheels and see where the balance weights are - are there two of them in two different places around the wheel (on the same side). if so, this would be counter balancing - they didn't get the balance right in the first place. that's just my random guess, but keep in mind, there must be two weights on ONE side of the wheel. if you feel the rim was bent up - then check for a massive weight on the wheel itself. they would need to compensate for an out of shape wheel with a lot of weight if it were messed up, even slightly.

other than that, I dont think tire pressures have anything to do with it, nor alignment.

let me know what you find.

wanna know what happened to me...... i had gotten into an accident where i need to replace 2 wheels.... i got new wheels and i went to Americas Tire Co to have them mounted and balanced.. well after weeks and weeks of driving my friedns that would drive along next to me would say hey yah know your front right wheel is wobbling pretty bad.. i ordered a new hub.. had the wheels inspected like 4 times.. no one could figure it out.. it couldnt be the rim cause it was brand new.. after finally bringing it to another rim place they took all the rims off and found the problem.. its almost funny to tthink how easy this could have been solved.. well it turns out Pep Boys replaced my wheel with one 6" width wheel on the back left.. one 6.5" wheels on the back right.. and vice versa for the front.. i was driving like this for over a month. i was furious but never contacted pep boys for their error.. hope this helps.

Thanks for all the response, I will definatly take a look at that schatten. I guess what they say is true, once you get into an accident, the car is never the same again.

I don't know if there is any correlation to your situation, but I recently had an alignment with the new tires I had put on, and the noticed a wobble (maybe better described as instability because it was a kind of side to side motion) at high speed that I didn't think was there before. The car was fine before that and never had an accident. But I noticed that car did not seem to be hooked up to road as well after the alignment and decided to see how it handled at high speed. I ran it up to 115 mph and got a noticable wibble wobble (not a vibration) after I let off the gas. I didn't notice that before. I'm not saying that your case is necessarily the same but perhaps alignment has something to do with it. Just a thought.

Alignment, tyre pressures, wheel balancing, and bent rims can all be culprits here.

I swapped out my winter wheels and put on my summer wheels and tested them out on the Autobahn. Previously, the winter wheels, even with rebalancing would give a shake at around 205kmh to 220kmh. Now with the different wheels, there's no shake whatsoever up to 260kmh.

Another thing I noticed was the insides of my previous tyres were more worn out than the outsides, such wear could also cause shakes at high speeds. Thus, proper tyre pressures are important.

I know that you just purchased the tires. Just to make sure, run your hand over the surface of the tires and make sure you don't feel any bubbles or buldges. It is a quick check and a part of the process of elimination.

Everyone is telling you to check alignment , rims, etc, and I second these ideas. The concern I see, is you have given us virtually no information on your accident. Was the frame bent or were alot of suspension pieces replaced or suspect. You may be fine on all accounts, but the frame may we out of whack. More info please.

Funny how the owner Big L neglected to tell me about any previous accident history before I purchased the car from him in November of 2004. And now I find this on s2ki... sigh. Assured me everything was okay....

so can Big L explain this and why he lied to me about this now that I already own his car??? I'm furious now!
