Possible S2000 buyer with some questions
Hey guys this is my first time posting on this forum, and it seems you guys know whats what with these cars. I recently got a new job that is going to require me to drive quite a bit (300 miles a week at least) and my current DD just is not going to cut it. I drive a 2003 Wrangler Rubicon and with the lift and tires I get 11-13 MPG, so now I am in the market for something that can do a little better. My options are to buy an S2000 or a Civic SI. Or lease a NEW Focus ST, NEW Fusion, or a NEW BRZ. I am leaning towards buying an s2k because it will cost the least and seems like it will be the most fun. I DD'ed a corvette for a while so the sporty/ impractical thing does not bother me at all but I need to save on gas if I am going to do 1200 miles a month.....should I even consider an S2k?
Now my questions are simple. What are some real word MPG you guys get and how reliable are these cars? Any years or models to stay away from and can I get something clean for under 15k? How are these cars with high miles? Thanks for your time and maybe I will join you guys soon.....

I usually get about 28 mpg all highway. I have even reached 30 mpg in a few occasions.
Since you mentioned the Civic Si also, I have a 06 Civic Si as a DD and I get between 31 to 33 mpg, 90% highway.
Both have been very reliable for me, nothing but routine maintenance.

Tearing around I get 25 mpg. Hwy 28-29. Best ever was driving 30mph for an extended period (Tioga Pass the day it opened) and I got 35. I confirmed that with milage check, gas fill, and tripometer. I don't expect to see that again.
I got a used Honda Accord with (2006-25K miles for $11.1-deal from a friend) and just did a cross country trip. Averaged 37mpg and that was moving at 70-80mph. Very comfortable car.
I use a 94 T Bird (original owner) for my DD but that is a misnomer as I only leave it at the airport a few times a month. I also use that for rush hour freeway driving and trips to the other side of the railroad tracks. That 4.7 V8 gets 27 on the freeway driving 75mph. 22 in town.
I like to drive the S when I can really enjoy it. Bumper to bumper traffic for miles on end is not fun in the S IMO.

My commuting is nearly 500 mostly freeway miles per week and i would not want to do it in my S2K. I like to have comfort, quiet, easy entry/exit, and an automatic transmission for the drive, so I split my commuting miles between the Prius and Ridgeline.

The best I've ever gotten is 27mpg on the freeway. Most of the time it's closer to 26mpg for me. Then again, I'll go on record as saying I don't consider the S2000 a particularly good long distance touring car. It's louder, and rougher than what most people are used to. The engine is also a bit buzzy on the freeway - turning about 4000rpms at 80mph.
I have an Acura TL along with the S2000. If I'm driving more than about 90 minutes at a time, I much prefer to take the Acura - especially if the roads are straight and boring.

The noise is probably going to be your biggest complaint as will be really hot days. The soft top never really cools out here.
It's rock solid, as any Honda and I get 26-28 average commuting.
After getting back into a sedan, so the dog can come to work with me, I wouldn't DD an S2k again. The Si is nearly as much fun with more cabin space.
