Default pros and cons of getting gears

I'm sorry not knowing the best place to post this question but I am thinking of getting gears as the first mod for my car. What do you think what gears should I get and the benefit of having it. Do I need to do other modification to accomodate having aftermarket gear on my car. Thanks a bunch.

I think it compensates for the lack of torque in this car. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this

Lower gearing (Higher number) means that you will get more low end grunt but you sacrifice RPMs at speed. So, you will go faster to start, and climb the gears faster, but you will have to shift more often as you top out the gears at lower speeds and when cruising at highway speeds, you will have a higher RPM which means louder and more fuel consumption. In effect, better power, lower MPG, more noise. (EDIT Lower top end, but I can't get my stock S to hit 9k in 6th anyway, actually, you'd probably have a higher obtainable top speed with most gears, but lower maximum speed of gearing.)

My decision was based on the fact that I have only taken my car past 140 mph once - I could use the help at lower speeds where I spend 99% of my time! I opted for the 4.57's and couldn't be happier!

I have 4.57's
gears are whiney but it doesn't bother me.
I have lost about 2-3 MPG, not bad at all in comparision to positive result.
Gears do not ad HP per say, but because of car being 6-800 RPM higher it feels like a 20-30 hp boost..seriously.
redline/rev limiter:
2nd 57mph
3rd 78 mph
4th 105 mph
5th 125 mph
6th, not sure but i got 140 and was still pulling
IMO gears might be the only power mod the car needs

and total price with install around 1200-1300$ thats the price of a header, but I promise you, header will not give you the performance the gears give

does anyone have the 4.77?How is it compared to the 4/57? When you say it's louder, does this mean the engine noise is louder? Where can I get the gear and how do you install it or where do you go to get it installed?TIA

I have the 4.77 and there is no increased noise. I also ran them with a N1 single exhaust and noise was not a factor. Also, the dec mpg is BARELY noticable. The change in acceleration is drastic (as CCarnel..he rode in my car). The difference between 4.77 and stock is night and day. I drove a car with 4.5 and wasn't impressed. Go with the 4.77, especially if you stay NA.

The 4.57's from Rick's are louder because, according to Rick, they are beefier and therefore stronger than the stock gears.

I do not know enough about the construction of the 4.77's; maybe some one here knows how they compare strength wise with the 4.57's. But the history of threads here indicates they are guieter than the 4.57's.

If you don't plan to SC or turbo, I'd go 4.77 and avoid the extra noise.
