my neighbor's s2000 pulls left with acceleration. the allignment checked out twice and the right rear tire is just about bald compared to the others with all the rear right torque generated. a member on the nsx site suggested it could be loose adjustment points or bad bushings or joints that allow it to shift under load. any ideas what gives? Thanks.
If the rear tires are not identical, the car will pull to one side or the other under acceleration and deceleration. I pinched a sidewall on my car when it had 2500 miles and bought a new S-02 just like the one I had destroyed. The car pulled to one side or the other from then on, regardless of what I did to the air pressure.
As soon as I put a new set of tires on the car it tracked straight and true again.
I wrecked another rear tire with the second set, but "fortunately" I only had 300 miles on the tire, so the replacement didn't affect handling at all.
i agree with the above posts. i experienced pulling twice. once was when I replaced only one rear tire so the tires were different in wear, and another time it did it, I inspected the rear tires and found the air pressure to be different (off by 15#)
Hopefully its just one of these problems as at least the "fix" will be easier.
I would suppose the LSD forces the rear wheels to spin at the same speed under certain circumstances. If the rear tires are not the same exact diameter, expect the rolling-foam-cup syndrome.
since i have been reading (and greatly appreciating) your responses, is it possible when she bought the car this summer (it had 6000 miles and now has 12000) the wear was already such that even though i made sure the tires were the correct pressure (they were off all the way around), the "damage" was already done to that right rear tire and nothing would improve the pulling?? Thanks again. she is currently replacing all 4 tires since this is her only car and she is putting all seasons on it for winter (our winters are not generally bad)
hey guys, just an update. she replaced all 4 tires with all season tires and the pulling is gone. that passenger's rear tire is shot and only 13,000 miles on the car, the others are fine. i see a class action suit coming, the way the nsx owners did with the original yokahomas. that just isn't right or fair that the tires wear so quickly. thanks for all your help!
Actually 13K miles sounds about right for the stock SO2s. You wont find many owners who get substantially more than that out of a set of rears. I changed my rears at 12.5K and there wasn't much left. I just changed my front SO2s at 16K miles. I could have run the fronts a little longer but with Winter setting in, I'm playing safe. Unless the previous owner has changed just one rear tyre at some stage, it sounds like your neighbour may need to get her alignment settings checked out!
