Default Put the new Stook through it's paces today

well i got the car yesterday and today i had to test it out a little today. Since i couldn't test acceleration cuz i'm breaking it in, i had to test it's handling. My gf and i decided to take a drive into the mountains. It was a nice curvy mountain road and i drove it basically as hard as possible without VTECing. I have to say, this car handles like it's on rails. I only got the stock tires to break lose once and that was going around a SUPER tight 15mph turn at about 35. It inspires confidence as much as any car i've driven (which includes basically everything on the market from WRXs to Vipers). By the way the weather was PERFECT here today, i couldn't have had a more perfect day with a more perfect car. I'm so psyched about my purchase, this is what buying a new car should be like.

Could someone explain to me what the term "understeer" refers to? I'm sure i've felt it many times i just dont' know what it is. Also what other terms relate to steering? I'd like to better be able to describe my experiences.

In laymen's terms understeer is when your front end plows or slides. Just like oversteer is when your back tires break loose understeer is when your front tires break loose.

Understeer is when the front tires of the car wont grip and you start to slide without being able to control the car. Its like your trying to turn but the front end just wont bite. Oversteer is when the back end comes out and you can power slide the car around. I loving to to a empty parking lot when it rains and try all sorts of fun stuff: drifts are best, start out with getting the back end lose by pulling the e-brake, then get back on the gas and counter steer, its quite a thrill. Have fun,
Kyle

so understeer is pretty much always bad, no? And most people i'm guessing like a little big of oversteer, myself included. I'm actually switching to 18" wheels with Kumho 712s so i guess i'll get a little bit more oversteer then which will actually be welcome. At times i felt the S02s were TOO stickey, i couldn't tell if they were going to break lose or not.

Switching to 18's with 712's (why those awful tires?) won't promote less understeer -- it's built into the chassis/suspension setup.

You will also find a nasty habit is for the S2k to exhibit bumpsteer -- essentially a change in toe -- it is the one glaring flaw of the whole setup (perhaps it rolls a bit too much too) IMO.

-Steve (who figures by now they have created solutions for these issues in the aftermarket but whose wife is probably safer without them).
