Default Putting top down when wet

My friend who owns a BMW 330ci with the softop was telling me that it is not a good idea to bring the top down right after a rainstorm or whenever your top is drenched because mold will grow if its down for a long period of time or the fact that the mechanical parts of the top will be messed up with water contamination.

Does that apply for us as well? I don't think it does but I wanted to make sure incase I did something foolish like this.

I agree that you should not put it down when wet. Cloth tops will grow mold if wet and the moisture would not be good to all the hinge points. I also wash my top after driving in heavy rain due to junk in the road spray from other cars. Those contaminants will turn to solids and increase wear and tear on your soft top.

I wouldn't put a wet top down for days, but there's no harm in dropping it after it gets wet. Also, our top is not cloth.

Totally agree. Just put it up at the end of the day/end of your drive and let it dry. Probably another thing to take away from this (for those above who don't know) is our top is vinyl, not cloth.

My top won't fold all the way down if it's wet.

The outside is cloth. The inside is vinyl.

other way around
The outside is vinyl "cloth-like" material.
The inside liner is cloth
Anyone with a tear in their top can look and see that the outer layer cracks/breaks with micro stress cracks anywhere that is a common tear point. Under that will be the fabric that rips and leaves strings of woven materal dangling.

Some of us have stayfast replacement tops (much nicer than OEM). Horrible idea with cloth..
