Default A question about front tire wear.

I now have just over 20k miles on my S2k and the front tires will need to be replaced very soon.

My question has to do with the way that the tires are wearing. Both the right and left fronts have worn down much more towards the inside of the tire rather than the outer edges.

Is this normal? Do I need to be concerned about this?

Yes, this is normal and 20k is not that bad for a set of fronts.

Several have suggested that the front be rotated by removing them from the rims and swapping sides. For me that is just too much work. But I bet it could get them to last about 10 more.

Sounds like an overinflation problem if the wear is ocurring more on the inside of the tread as opposed to the outside. Check your pressures in the morning and adjust as necessary.

First, make sure your alignment is correct. Assuming that it's okay, the uneven wear suggests that the alignment is too aggressive for how the car is driven. You have two choices:

1) If you want to maintain maximum cornering ability, live with the uneven tire wear.

2) For increased tread life and even wear, get a less aggressive alignment setup, but give up a little of the max cornering ability.

This is a frequent topic in the Tire and Wheel forum.

At 20k this is normal. In the future do not leave the tires un-rotated for such a long time. To even the wear you need to remove the tire from the wheel and flop them so when remounted they still roll in the correct direction, but the inner worn edge will now become the outer edge.

The innerwear is from negative camber, not over inflation or anything like that. The negative camber is what helps to give the car such great steering input, compromise it too much and you will get more even wear, and a lousy handling S2000.

And as always I must point out, if you have not had the alignment checked in the last year, clearly it is time to take it in and get it done!

Should the alignment be done by the dealer?

dont think it's over inflation. over inflation tends to cause more wear at center of tire. under inflation tends to cause wear at the edges. your tire wear pattern is probably due to alignment.
